Default Hi I want to do C/L pulse jet speed project

Years ago I did C/L combat stunt etc and now years of RC electric glow

I have located a out of the way location suitable place for Pulse Jet C/L but not suitable for RC as high up craft noise will travel too far
but the problem is grass cxan be fairly high at time

Just looking for the basic info plans motors what types of wires such as mono wire or twin wire

I prefer fairly normal craft two equal wings normal tail plane set up cross or v tail

Do I need a post to hold onto and how much pull of lines
I prefer longest lines possible and am happy to get moderate speeds ~150mph plus
Also need plans for the takeoff dolly from high grass or spring launch catapult
info on suitable start up equipment

and any various stuff that might be useful like fuel mixxes brews and location sources for spare parts

An RC plane at any height and with any size unmuffled engine will be totally drowned out by a pulse jet. Unless you've heard one running you can't imagine just how loud those things are. Grass and pulse jets don't mix...or maybe they mix too well .

I can't help out with any specific details.

However, a good source of information is the North American Speed Society (NASS)

see here for details: http://www.clspeed.com/

Thomas Wilkes has (with the permission of NASS) made avaialable past issues of the NASS newsletter which contain much information on control line jet speed flying. The CD is a very good source of reference information:

http://www.cpinternet.com/~tawilk36/...es/Page553.htm

www.pulse-jets.com is one of the better web resources (but you may have already found that one)

RC planes too noisy? A pulse jet will put to shame noise wise any noisy RC plane and if you are wanting to fly off of a grass field with long grass you had better be prepared to put out grass fires as well.

cheers, Graham

John Walker, one of Australia's top speed fliers has the pulse jet totally sussed.

Starts in about three pumps of the starter pump, and he's airborne in a flash (oops). Doesn't bother with a dolly, just lets it sled along until he's got his speed up.

It's the most noise I've heard other that a F1 car.

Regards

Flew a pulse-jet once, many years ago, never again! The noise, the 2' tongue of flame out of the rear, and the speed and pull on the lines frightened the **** out of me!

If you DO decide to go ahead, make ABSOLUTELY sure that you use the heaviest braided steel lines you can get, and that the whole leadout/bellcrank system is as strong as it's possible to make it, use a steel bellcrank and make sure that it is really strongly attached.
If that thing gets loose you have a lethal unguided missile!
Oh, and wear earplugs!

My advice really is, stay away from the things!

For anyone who's never seen a pulse jet in action, they are scary!

Ivanhoe,
Kewl picture. I've never seen one running that wasn't launched quickly after it started. And the guys who flew them used to tell everyone that they'd be ruined if they were run statically. They did say that they didn't produce much thrust until they got moving. But I never saw any but DynaJets.

Noise? They're awful.

The guys around here that flew them back in the 70s had only a couple of big boys who did all the piloting. And none of them looked like he was actually having fun.

You're quite right, Rock, if you don't get airflow round a Dynajet real quick, it starts to melt!

The jet in my photo is what is called a "valveless" pulsejet, (Not sure of the technical details) you can run those statically for a short time (If you can stand the noise, and the bench is REALLY solidly fixed!)

I ran Dynajets in the 50's. Some of my high lites of modeling. Most fun at or near dark, the flame and color were something else streaking around that circle.

The above note on lines and bell crank seems if one were to follow the guides used today and there should be no problem. Jets fly quite well at the NATS, and much faster these days.

Good luck, it will be fun.

I had the Emil Brauner pulsejet builded from the plan, the engine are louder than other engines i knew.. The main problem are burned valves, they can not last long and other problem are the pulsejet are fuel thirsty.. The engine got glowing cone between burner camber and tail pipe and a long blue flame out of tail pipe, the plane must be insulated against heat by pulsejet.

I have watched some of these videos on U-Tube, and I just thought I'd mention that, to the best of my knowledge (and I stand to be corrected on this) it would be illegal to fly an R/C model powered by a pulsejet in the U.K. I am not even sure of the legality of c/l pulsejet here. I know that, many years ago, the engines were illegal if used in anything but a c/l model. As I say, I am prepared to be corrected on this by more knowledgable people, but anyone contemplating building a pulsejet model in the UK would be as well to check the legal aspects thereof.

Heh! Good advice to be sure but remember how many things in life are tried out by those who simply get a thought in their head...
Still in the interests of the hobby one does not want to possibly make others think that all control line flying is dangerous. It probably would not take as much as you or I might think if there were some kind of accident involving one of these jets to create an uproar against all C/L flying.

We just don't need that at all.

Robert

In a book (one that I would like to find, do not know the name of it) back in the late 60's, it had a C.L. model of a metal covered X-1. The forward windscreen was left uncovered to allow air in for cooling to the enclosed pulsejet.

It sounds like this would fit this forum's quest, but again do not have the book's name and has been years sence I last read it. Anybody ever see this book?

Thanks for any helpful answers !

Remby, I have seen the book and the picture of the model you saw.
I am pretty sure it was "Building and Flying Model Airplanes"
by Walter A. Musciano
It may have been one of his other books.

I was right about the title and author of the book (see my previous post).

Here is a picture of the model. I was sure I had it!
