Lead outs?
 

Hi!
I have restarted buiding a Nobler kit that I started building 35 years ago...[8D] and wonder how thick the lead out wires should be.
In millimeters please.

I use .027 (~.7mm)on my 42 year old Nobler and they are still good.

.6858 milimeters or .027 inch Seven-strand stainless steel wire cable. Most would just buy a Sullivan kit, http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXFU27&P=SM

I'd agree the .7mm leadouts would be fine, they'd be about 4 times stronger than the lines themselves (.015"/.38mm). I don't know how far along you've got with the build but I'd suggest using carbon fibre and ball joints for the controls. Personally I use 5.5mm alloy cored carbon fibre arrow shafts (quite cheap) for my pushrods.

So, 0.38mm lines will do if I power the Nobler with an OS .40 LA? How long (Meters) should the lines be?

How about Sullivan Tufstrand wires? Any knowledge about them, pros and cons?

I've seen a Flite Streak flown with Tuffstrand lines. The guy changed to steel lines and was very impressed with the improvement in performance.

I have made this comment before, re: the so-called Tuf-strand lines   I've known people who tried them.  I don't know anyone who has tried them twice.

They are so large in cross section that there is a huge increase in line drag.  If you try them on a model previously flown with normal steel lines, the model will probably end up coming across the circle on you.

One would be much better off using a Spectra or Dyneema fishing line (Spiderwire or equivalent).  Well proven and lots of info available.  Use the same diameter as you would steel, as per Safety code.

For the Nobler/LA40, .015 x 60 feet, (.7mm x 18.5 m) as detailed above.  BTW, .015 Spiderwire is 80 lb. test, I believe.

I bought tuffstrand, 52 feet (15.8 m) on sale and used it on my Ringmaster Jr. with OS 15FPS. It seems to be okay. I'm not into competition, so can't give pros, cons. AMA safety rules allow it for demos and practice, but not during competition. Appreciate the comment from mikeainia on fishing line. That might be worthwhile for me to try for sport flying.
