Space Bug .049
 

Does anyone know the weight of a C*x Space Bug .049? I am about to build a Teenie Geeie stunter from the 50's and since I don't have a Space Bug for it I will be using a Black Widder .049. That ought to put it in orbit (LOL).

Don't have a scale but here is a size comparison. You might find that the power difference is not that much. Remember the Space Bug was a very powerful engine for its day. At least with the BW you don't have to drill a hole for the intake. :)

George, the Space Bug shown on the plan is not the same engine as the one in your picture. It is much shorter than a Black Widdow and I'm concerned about the weight difference because the model will probably turn out nose heavy because of the difference in length/weight? I may decide to shorten the nose so that the BW thrust washer lines up with the original.

I think that is the SpaceBug Junior, which was the Babe Bee of its day, on the plan. I'd shorten the nose a little perhaps. 1/2A's fly pretty good very nose heavy, so I wouldn't be too concerned.

Dennis,
I remembered Roy Clough's "Teenie Geenie" (sp), so I looked it up. As soon as I saw the plan I remember thinking they had left out the "Jr." on the plan. Your "Black Widder" (I like that) is way more powerful than the Space Bug Junior. That said, I would shorten the nose a bit, as Jim suggested. Don't forget the ping-pong ball!

George, I'm cutting balsa for the Genie today. I know someone with a S.B. Jr., which I will try to coerce out of him. If unsuccessful I can always resort to using the Widder.

I think the ping pong ball defintely adds a little charisma to the model but also a little extra drag. I will put one in the cockpit because the Geeie will look "barenekkid" without it.

The Space Bug, Space Bug Jr., and the Black Widow all share the mounting holes. Just make sure you cut the intake hole in the firewall if you are going to use the SB or SB Jr. Also note that the fuselage bottom has an open area for air.
And finally, make sure the landing gear clears the mounting bolts and intake hole area. Let us know how it turns out.

Started on the Geenie to sharpen up my slightly rusty building skills for more serious work this winter. Talk about an economical build! A few scraps of 1/16" sheet, a few pieces of strip wood plus some 1/32" balsa sheeting (not shown) and I have the thing kitted. Materials must be worth about a buck and a half at todays prices. Here's a preview:

Well, the Geenie is starting to take shape. Working with 1/16" sq. spars and 1/32" wing sheeting isn't the easiest thing in the world to do. So far I'm pleased with this little thing.
