Want to know, does the Brodak .049 have the "built-in" tank such as the Cox .049's?, looking to get started again w/ a 1/2A kit.

No it lools like a Tee Dee engine. No tank is included. Been hearing the Pros and Cons about the engine and holding off till I get a better review myself.

Actually, there are some versions that have a plastic tank/mount assembly. It makes it longer than a Cox Babe-Bee or Black Widow type. For C/L, a Norvel is an awesome powerhouse, no mixed reviews about it! I put a Big Mig .061 on a Sig Skyray with a 6 x 3 Master Airscrew and couldn't believe how fast it went. I since went back to an old Golden Bee to slow it down.

Edit number 2: I tried to give you a link to the "BigMig Start'up .061 C/L" but I only seem to get the main menu at Sig in my address bar, but you can find it by clicking Engines, Norvel, C/L engines and then BigMig Start'up .061 C/L on the left side of the page.

Do you have a specific plane in mind?

The Cox "Sure Start" is available from the Cox site for $6.99 plus shipping. It is a radial mount engine and, as it comes from Cox, must have spacers on the firewall (~3/8" sq.) to mount it. For most, a 5.5x3 to a 6x3 should be a good prop. Us 15% fuel with 20%-22% lube, some castor. BUT, this requires an external tank.

Cox also has one tank engine listed on their site. I think the engine part is the same as the Sure Start. You may still find some of the other tank mount engines on the online hobby shops.

The Norvel Big Mig Startup or CLX are available and are excellent engines. They are probably more power than you want on most 1/2A ships, however.

The Norvel or Brodak .049 would fit nicely on a Brodak kit for beam mounted engines...such as the Baby Flite Streak. If you go for the Big Mig .061 instead of an .049, you want to use a low pitch prop such as a APC 6x2 to keep the speed down.

Look around a bit. Don't get "locked in" to a radial mount.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I'm bound & determined to get the old Carl Goldberg "Lil Wizard", and fly it. Had one in early 70's and am now back to control line, ha.

Anyway, found some good priced Cox .049 @ Lone Star Balsa, out of Texas. He wants only 28.75 for the Black Widow, 31.50 for the Killer Bee, and 27.50 for the Babe Bee, any suggestions on which engine George.

While the Wizard is a great old airplane you would do much better with a set a Lil Hackers from Brodak. You get 2 planes for about $25 plus shipping. They hold up and fly better than a sheet wing plane.
Go with the BW, but if you want the Killer Bee you can do a little better on the Bay. I seen one for BIN at $20.
In any case have fun and fly. Too many guys sitting on their stuff when they should be out there flying.

I agree with Jay, go for the Black Widow.

Lone Star is a good place to do business. Coincidentally, I got two BW's from Lone Star a few years ago. They also have excellent balsa if/when you want to scratch build or build from plans.

And I guess I'm one of the guys who is guilty of "sitting on my stuff". I have an engine collection.

Thanks for the info, yes, I'm a sitter too. Lots of fly rods, motorcycles, etc, etc. I also shop around, and after a gazillion follow-ups, Lone Star was the lowest priced stuff. I'm glad you informed me they were good business people, thanks again.

I believe Lone Star is still owned and operated by Riley Wooten, who was a well known CL flyer in the nineteen fifties. He designed some famous combat ships that became kits, wrote articles for model mags, and was, I believe, the first combat guy to get a two second kill (if I remember correctly) at the Nats.

Yes George, interesting facts you posted regarding Riley Wooten. 2 second kill, wow. I haven't called down there yet, however, he is shown on the web site as being the owner and I belived that is Riley sitting @ his design table on the home page.
