RE: Voodoo Plane
At one time the plans for the voodoo were half size. You could build a half size voodoo for 1/2As from the plans. Quite a few folks did that to fly 1/2A combat. In the sixties when Will Rogers flew with us we had a 1/2A combat contest in Baton Rouge. Will was flying a 1/2 size voodoo with a TD .051 on it fueled with a small pacifier tank. Covered with silk it was a great little plane.

RE: Voodoo Plane
ORIGINAL: HighPlains Is the Nimbus what you flew at the Airpark at noon at the quickie race? It was quite agile. I flew a Voodoo with a ST G21-35 many years ago. I think it was doing a bit more than 100mph, it felt insanely fast, but didn't turn like a modern design. I later converted a Guillotine combat design to RC, as that was done back in the late 60's and early 70's. Back in des moines iowa Johnny carr kitted his design the Guillotine and in ~1971 actually kitted a R/C version. Called the RC guillotine. 2 channel with a 15 engine. aileron and elevator and it actually flew pretty good once one got used to the aileron type controls. Whichare rate controls as opposed to rudder action whichis a position control. I just hope in shipping box 145 or whatever I still have the g21/35 engine. my .02 |
RE: Voodoo Plane
ORIGINAL: vertical grimmace One more item, there was also a Super Satan. These were really cool looking and I suppose they would have flown very well. No kit was ever manufactured but I had seen a construction article in an old Flying models I think. The key to this design was the tapered wing and high aspect ratio. Very difficult to reproduce in quantity and this design came along close to when foam was introduced. That is when we were led into what many fly now until the Euro FAI arfs appeard. I still fly foamies and my design is called a Nimbus. It has won many local events and I currenly have several ready for battle. Iskandar |

ORIGINAL: DaveSR71 ORIGINAL: iflyg450 Here is mine plans built engine is Super Tigre Combat 35!!!!!!!! The video was the first flight http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r0fN2YQq5M Sounded like a C thats not broken in and has needle to lean. Or its a fresh G-21 being very rapidly cooked. Non Castor fuel? Airplane looks good!Nice work! David I came across a few G21/35s on ebay. They seem to go for a great deal of money these days. What I want to build is a Nemesis II. Still have a Mark VI, a Mark VII (unassembled - it ate a circlip), a Wiley and two or three Mark IVs. Iskandar |

ORIGINAL: F.Imbriaco Some polite clarification , here. The Lil' Satan ( and Junior Satan)were designed & kitted by Carl Goldberg .The Voodoo - designed by Riley Wooten. Neither plane(s) have anything in common with each other. The Super Satan ( Tapered)was designed by Larry Scarinzi during 1966-67 and never kitted . It followed Larry's Killer , Giant Killer and straight winged Super Satan. It appeared on the cover of M.A.N. in Sept. 1967. Recently , a kit cutter did a batch of them. http://www.ebay.com/itm/CL-SUPER-SAT...-/170675572266 Something else interesting that I found: http://www.ebay.com/itm/CL-RAUNCHY-C...-/180705286093 Good grief - is that Bobby and Andy in that photo??? (I'm of a somewhat more recent vintage, active from about 1983-2000. All I've ever built is foam wings!) Iskandar |

The original Voodoo was designed by Riley Wooten in 1961. It was kitted by CARL GOLDBERG. At the time it was the only kit Goldberg sold that wasn't his design. The Voodoo took 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in the 1962 Nats using Johnson engines. Johnson took all three places in all the catagories (open, junior, and senior) at those NATS. I flew Combat at the 63 NATS. I was 16 and it was something else hanging out with the "Big Boys". Didn't do all that great but I took 26 place in senior and thought I'd won the world championships.
I built and flew dozens of Voodoos in the early 60's as well as other kitted designs. The Voodoo was made in two variations. One had short booms and one had long booms. I built nothing but short booms. Got too old for Open AMA combat. The kids were beating me left and right. Reflexes tend to slow with age. The Voodoo had a 36 inch span. The only difficult part in plan building was the shaped leading edge. Wooten solved that with his DEMON. It used a 1/2 inch square leading edge. Otherwise it was pretty much a Voodoo. I have one of those now and a couple voodoos. The one in the picture was made in 1966 but never flown. It has a Johnson C/S on it. The kits were $2.95 for the single and $4.95 for the double. Goldberg made two other C/L kits that were really smaller versions of the Voodoo. The 1/2A was the Li'l Satan and later he released the Junior Satan that used a 15. Fast Airplane. The one I built used a Cox Special 15 Mk II. A Super Satan came out later. I have plans for all of them. I still fly these now and then with old high school buddies. We drink a few beers and relive our past. They took all the fun out of combat these days. No one can afford it anymore. I financed my hobby back in the 60's delivering the Seattle Times. The most expensive engine was the Johnson 36 Ball Bearing at $24.95. Had to win those at that price. I still have a bunch of Johnsons. That's all I used untill Hi quit making them and we went to Super Tigre. ORIGINAL: Jim Thomerson A 35 engine, in this case. Displacement of @ 0.35 cubic inches, about 7 times as large as an .049. The original Voodoo was designed about 1959. They were kitted by Top Flite and were a very popular airplane. Most control line old-timers have flown a Voodoo at one time or another. They were designed for control line combat and were fast and maneuverable. CAD plans are modern plans using "Computer Aided Design". the kit prices are just for interest, telling you that is what the kits cost back in the 60's. There was a single kit to build one, and a double to build two. I understand that Riley Wooten got 25 cents for each kit sold. (Don't know if he got 50 cents for the double;) |
RE: Voodoo Plane
I moved to Lubbock in the fall of 1959, and left in the summer of 1961. I think, but am not sure, that the guys were flying Voodoos when I arrived. I was in the hobby shop when Riley brought in the painted up Voodoo for the Goldberg kit box art. So the Voodoo was designed in that time frame, and possibly a little earlier.
To correct my post about Riley getting 25 cents for each kit. He, a couple of years back, told me it was 5 cents for each kit, and his first check, and those for several subsequent years, was $5000. |
RE: Voodoo Plane
Check one of the 1961 Model Airplane news magazines. There is a write up on the Voodoo in it. I can dig it out but not tonight. Also the ads for the kit didn't start until then.
Another little item, The Voodoo instructions show a Johnson Combat Special which wasn't made until late 1960 so the kit had to have come out later than than that. |
RE: Voodoo Plane
I had a Johnson Combat Special at the 1960 Nats, in a rat racer. (Can't recall his first name) Garcia from Johnson was there with one also. There wasn't any rat event, so we just flew for fun.

Hi EHE, That Voodoo looks an awful lot like a SNEEKER to me. That's good because the SNEEKER flies a lot better than a Voodoo. Tony |

Thanks Greg Jim |
For what it's worth, the Voodoo construction article was published in the July, 1961 issue of Model Airplane News, but was described as the winner of the 1959 Nats. Riley also mentions running a Voodoo with a Custom Johnson Combat Special at the 1960 Nats.

Loved the VooDoo and I think I saw one my old G21 35's in a box some were.. Sounds like fun!!! |
Hi Ken
I'm going to take some streamers down with me for show but I think there is going to be to many people around, Have to wait and see Jim |
BCM, There are still a few guys that fly 80 mph combat near Toronto and Dresden if you want to play. Maybe some of the same ones from the 60's. 70's anyway. I am guessing you are north of Toronto. Centennial park in Etobicoke is about the most active club around you. Maybe one or three guys around Lake Simcoe still do it?
