Carl Goldberg's 1/2A C/L's
 

I would like to see some pictures and stories of some of the old Carl Goldberg 1/2A control-liners. These were around a bit before I could get my hands on any of them, and now I see they are back being made with Brodak Mfg. and I want one!

However, I am not totally familiar with all of them and Brodak does not show pictures of any of them (picture comming soon excuse).

Most of mine were Scientific. Hollow log variety.
I did have one of the Goldberg models. It was the Little Toot biplane. Everyone loves a bipe!

Sorry no pictures. I used the aluminum silver mettalic Aerogloss dope to finish it. Boy I do wish I had taken at least one picture.

Mine flew well but was no stunter. Large loops and wingovers. I didn't try inverted with that one.

Sure looked great in the air!

P.S. They appear from time to time on $bay. There are two there right now. Both look like new kits.

Yep, Penn Valley still has one at 34 bucks I see. I swiped the pic while I was there. Brodak is more appealing with the laser cut and lower price if it comes with all the same hardware and decals as the kit. They dont say, its all generic description and price for the old Golberg kits. I would have to write or call them to find out the scoop on that.

I helped fly a Little Toot of my buddies once. He had the .020 PeeWee on his and he used something like 15-20 foot lines...anyways smaller than usual. The thing zipped pretty good.

Those Scientific kits are good ones too for having a bunch of 1/2A size C/L. Those log fuses are still being used in a line of current kits I'll have to find it...
Scientific seemed to be more keen on what types of planes they decided to kit...seems they had the nicer designs but not cut like a Goldberg.

I flew a stuntman 23 with a Golden Bee .049 as a kid. It was as good a flying profile - slab wing plane as I found then. Only one I could fly all the maneuvers I knew at the time without fear of the plane not making the maneuver. Never did any outside maneuvers but I'm sure if I had known how to it would have done them.

The Lil Whizard was a great trainer. Lil Jumping Bean had a built up wing, profile fuse and tail group, and was a very good flyer. Lil Satan for speed and stunts, nice simple build, built up wing on her.

Scientific models had one I built called the Zipper. It was a built up fuse, and a plastic top cover for it, built up low wing, trike gear. Looked like a pattern plane from that era, another good flyer. Still have th plans for it, and have a add from that era showing most of their kits from that time, will try to get it posted here.

I have several of the CG 1/2A kits NIB. I copied everything and still fly them. Lil Toot my favorite

The Brodak kits are VERY close copies of the Goldberg kits. The box art is the same and the plans are the same blue line art drawings. Excellent! Buy one or all for a trip down memory lane!!

No pics, but over the years I have built and flown 1 or more of:

L'il Wizard
Little Toot (free flight with Pee Wee - fun!)
Swordsman 18
Stuntman 23
Little Jumping Bean
Little Jumping Bean modified with flaps
Little Satan

All fly well, but don't all perform the same. Of all of these the Jumping Bean was a pile of fun and quite aerobatic. The one I built with flaps flew great. The Satan is very aerobatic of course and zips along. The Stuntman 23, if not built overly heavy is a good stunter as far as profile models go, better than the Swordsman 18 which has less wing. I wouldn't bother with a Little Toot on C/L, but as a zippy free flight it is a pile of fun, and won't glide away either. A Pee Wee .020 or TD .010 is plenty of power for FF, forget .049's!

Ordered Monday morning received Wed evening. The Little Toot box art , single sheet plan & decals are exactly the same as the originial. The die cutting & wood are excellent. I will build this weekend. Ambroid glue and dope finish. Just like the 60s. If only my mother was alive to say, "What is that smell."

That pic of the Staggerwing and Little Toot is crazy! When I was about 10 years old, my Dad flew the Staggerwing with that N number in the Reno Air Races in 1970 (before they had the T-6's)! His friend John Elliot, another TWA pilot, owned the original Little Toot with that same N number on your model, too!

the finnish is monokote. i used transparents, solid colors, and black. built both together from scratch plans from internet,ebay i think.

I asked my Dad about the Staggerwing N number and he reported that his friend in C/L Stunt Mike Stott saw a Reno Air Race report in a magazine and recognized Dad's name. He was desgning the little Staggerwing and made the markings as a real life connection.

The Little Toot N number is another scale number, this of the prototype airplane later bought by Dad's friend. pretty neat-o.

Here are some family history picks about Beech Staggerwings and little biplanes; first pic is Mom and Dad's Staggerwing that was our family cruiser when I was in school, second is my brothers B-17R where we (I'm in the right seat as formation safety pilot) were photoed by some famous aviation photgraphers!, next is Bryant Morris's G17S Dad raced at Reno, and last is my Pitts Special that was taken when I raced at Reno. This airplane stuff can really be contagious!

anyone have a set of plans for the little jumping bean? I've got one I picked up off ebay a few years back, (built), thought it would be nice to have a set of plans just in case.

The "Bean" was my second kit (the Baby Ringmaster was the first) and it was a great little number. If you do get the templates for the fuselage, ribs, tips and tail I'd like a copy of 'em. The plane is simple to build and is a great flyer on 30 foot lines. At least get a picture out to us!

The L'il Jumpin' Bean was a smaller version of the Shoestring stunter. Even the wing was built the same. I followed the directions for the Fox .09 installation, what a squirrely nob the plane was.[X(]

My Bean had a Black Widow and the first honest to goodness good looking finish I had done in red, white and blue. Up until that time I had never even flown a plane inverted until a more experienced fllyer took it in hand and wrung it right out. Iwas never that good with it, but *** sure helped me move up the ladder to the larger stuff.
Ihad noticed the resemblence to the Shoestring and will likely build another even if Ihave to "eyeball engineer" it since I'm too cheap to pay "market" (ahem) for it. Ican imagine it must have been quite the handful with that .09!

If it was one of these Fox .09 engines, I really feel for you and you need a do-over! It may have been a handfull with this engine but not likely as BtnFlyGuy would have imagined it. This .09 was very heavy and suffered from severe anemia...

Actually, Mine doesn't have the 1959 glow head, it had the later Fox .10 glow head which has a smaller volume. It screams. I should tach it but I have no older head to compare it to. I forgot to mention, the Cox Tee Dee .15 glowhead fits this engine.

Jumping bean/ Baby Shoestring.

Built light and converted to profile mount for TD with 5x4 prop.
Screw you in the ground fun!
