Recent vintage combat projects
 

For whatever reason, I've been on a tear building some old combat rigs, all scratch from plans.

A Classic "short tail" VooDoo, with a hard pressure tank and a ST G21 .46. Covered in silk, trimmed with tissue on the wing. The frame came out a couple of ounces heavier than I might have liked, but I had to beef up certain areas to handle the .46. With a 9x8 RevUp and 5% nitro stunt fuel, it was quite fast and flew as well as I remember any VooDoo ever flying.

The Berryman Super Twister, also covered in silk. Trims are dope on this one. The intended motor is a rear rotor ST G40. The G40 is NOS and not quite broken in yet. I'm taking it slow with this one. It shows some real promise on a 75/25 FAI break in mix with an 8x8 APC.

A Melvin Mathews Killer from plans published in AAM back in 1971. Just flew this one today and it was great (or as good as one can expect a low aspect ratio era combat plane to fly). It was pretty quick with a ST C.35 running my 5% nitro stunt mix I use on the Fox Stunt .35's. Clear covering is FasCal 500, red trim and tail are Ultracoat, the blue is epoxy paint.

I've got a hankering to build a Scarinzi Super Satan next and maybe a Wooten Sneeker.

Nice going but the sun wants to shine on them! Get them out of the shadows and into the sun!

You might be able to find a Walter Umland kit for the Sweet-Sweep. A really neat looking combat airplane designed by the Grogan brothers of Fort Worth-Dallas area in the early 1950's.

The Twister plans were at least 35 years old that I'd gotten from MAN back in the 70's. The Killer plans were the tiny magazine plans that I took to Kinkos and enlarged (about $5) after doing the math on what the enlarge percentage needed to be, and the Voodoo plans were also enlarged at Kinkos out of an old book of "Kit Plans" that AMA published some time ago.

I put another flight on the Killer a few days ago. This time I ran it on a straight 75/25 methanol/oil mix and it was about as fast as with the 5% nitro fuel. That particular C .35 has beastly compression. I don't remember if I upped it over stock or not. I fitted that engine back in the 70's. I do remember working on the crankshaft fit to loosen it a bit and did a bit of lapping with Lava. I may have eliminated any head gaskets and lapped the head right to the liner.
