Whip Powered
 

Has anyone ever done a whip powered control line? Is it any fun? Can you stunt? Do you need a fishing pole or is there an alternative? Any other comments would be welcome too! I just bought the P-39 from Blackhawk models and am very impressed with the quality of the kit and was looking for any pointers or comments.........thanks in advance for responses. [8D]

If you can get your hands (or eyes) on a copy of Building and FlyingScale Model Aircraft by Walter Musciano, there is an entire chapterdevoted to building flying a whip powered version of the Bell X-1. Thisis the book that got it all started for me back in the '60's and a musthave for C/L folks if only nostalgia purposes. Check your library ore-mail me and I'll try to send you enough not to violate any copyrightissues.

John, That was a great find for the Musciano reference. Iknow that I value my hard copy, plus the magazine articles and plans that I'm trying to gather from my "glory days" of the '70's.

Yeah, I did it years ago. Never did the whip powered, but did wind fly. Didn't do too much of it and never tried when it was less than WINDY. Also, didn't try any square corners. Never thought to. Quite frankly, after the amazing feeling that I was doing it, there wasn't much fun in it. And I couldn't do overhead 8s. And decided I didn't want to either.

Having a somewhat dark sense of humor, I convinced a flying buddy, who flew mostly combat, that I'd done it with a combat wing as well as a profile (my Magician 35). Some weeks later he called the house wanting to come over and kick my .......

I think the tough part was launch if I remember correctly. You need someone who can give it some speed but not pull the handle out of your hand.

During the period of the great patent wars or there abouts between Jim Walker and the Stanzell brothers, The stanzells first sold the SkyShark kit intended for the early glow engines like the Brown Jr. and it used what they called the "G" line control system. It essentially was a form of whip control.

The plans illustrated the method which consisted of an eight foot bamboo pole and a system of leading edge standoffs with the whip line well forward of both the leading edge and CG. Both the rudder and elevator were fully articulated and used a system of rubber bands to lock in fine adjustments.

Later to avoid royalties to Jim Walker the Stanzells developed the mono line control system.

We've tinkered with whip control for nearly 50 years. In the past year we've done most of our whip control flying. For us it has proven to be a simple, inexpensive form form backyard flying. We are hard pressed to find a more enjoyable activity for the amount of cost and effort required. I came across some info on Jim Walker's whip models, you may enjoy reading through it. Also lots of other interesting pages and old movies about Jim Walker on there.......John
