Simple Saber Control line trainer plan
Hello to all
Looking for the plans for a little control line 1/2a trainer call the Simple Saber. I spoted it one evening browsing the forums but did not think to down load the plan and that got me in a little trouble with my 9 year old son.[&o] now he's asking dear old dad to go back and find it[X(]? he thanks it would be cool for his next model project and thats good thing. he like fly control line with papa it get him off the x-box and build some thing like the old man and out to the flying field pretty sure it was spotted here on RC Universe. (a great forum buy the way) so if any of you kind gentleman know of this one here or a set of plans and could point me to them It would be most appreciated. Thx. kenny e and son |

I doubt you'll see a plan in the forums, but you'll see a number of links to places that sell them in the sticky "Where to find......" that's right above this thread in the list. Top of this forum. Thread has links to CL businesses. Tom Dixon's business would be a likely place to look.

I've got a set - I will dig it up and see what I can do with it. I might even have
extras. (Can you handle printing of .dxf or .dwg files?). That IS the CMI kit of the '70's that you are talking about, right? |

Here is a scan (had to do it in four parts and 'paste' them together) - This is a jpg and I don't know if I can
make it a pdf - it might be too big for my 'doc2pdf' converter. In fact, if you want a better copy, just PM me your mailing address and I'll mail you one- I found an extra. Since this was a kit plan, there are no dimensions listed on it so I put a 5 inch scale up by the title box. and RCU will probably not store it full size, since it is at 75 dpi right now (1760 x 1188). I'll email you the full size version at the address above. There is a little distortion, but really, it came out pretty good. I don't know if you are familiar with CMI - Carr Models, Inc. (I think). The "Carr" in CMI is Johnny Carr, who designed the Guillotine for Combat and kitted that and several 1/2A's of similar construction to this one. Johnny is a member of our club and up until last year was still flying a little and has some really nice flying 1/2A combat planes of more modern design. |

Mike, looks like you have the wrong plan friend. I believe Ken is looking for the Simple Sabre Trainer which I have. Yours is clearly the Super Sabre Trainer. While they may look similar the Simple has a larger wingspan.

Actually, I was just trying to have a little fun with you mike. :D
I am sure this is the same plane with a few minor changes in the plan. At a glance the planes looks identical but as you can see on the plan I have the first 'S' stsmds for Simple not Super and in the legend (box at the bottom with all the writing in it) the wingspan is listed as 18". This plan was a pull out plan in one of the model magazines, not sure which one right now. These full size pull out plans won't be found in the regular plan groups and have no plan number nor can they be ordered from the plan services as you would with one of the reduced plans. The only way one can have one of these plans is to find which issue of which magazine and hope to find an old copy of which the plan has not been removed. As I recall, it was from American Aircraft Modeler/Model Builder.

Wouldn't it be cool to start a theard or a website some place dedicated to these old control liner center fold magazine plans. at lest the one's that we know have long scents expired copyrights:D

No hard feelings at all I never had the kit and I didn't realize the plane had been published in a magazine - I wonder if the kit was developed because of the magazine article .. Johnny Carr has been pretty inactive for the last 18 months or so - I think that retirement and moving to a new house have kept him more than occupied. But I will not be surprised if he starts to show up again. If he does, I will be sure and ask him about the history of this model.
I imagine that any changes from one version to the other were to accomodate the smaller amount of real estate available as a magazine center fold as opposed to the full 16 x 24 plan in the kit. |

I found the source...it's the May '72 issue of American Aircraft Modeler and the article can be had from:

The original Google search parameters I used were: "control line plans 1/2A"

Left in '72 for the air force and never lived there again. Glad Johnny was (and hopefully is) around and active. He "retired" from competition back in '72 or so. added: Ialso remember Dean Swift wrote an article on one of the 1/2 kits for the magazine. His "peal the bark off the balsa" type writing style is entertaining. |
