Default Phoenix Dolphin Crash - and rebuild - and crash

A friend of mine (we'll call him "rob") got into RC planes because of me. He started with a Tower Trainer 40, and upon crashing it after 2 or 3 flights decided to move up to a Phoenix Dolphin 40. On his 2nd time out flying (I was there watching), he took off and turned WITH the wind. This gave him no lift and he caught his wing tip on a snowbank and it cartwheeled a couple of times snapping the fuselage just behind the cockpit.

He gave up on flying and gave everything to me as a birthday present. Yeah - he gave me a broken plane as a birthday gift. :] And the radio - and the engine - and everything else he had for flying.

Anyway - I decided to rebuild the plane and I took these shots:

Default RE: Phoenix Dolphin Crash - and rebuild - and crash

So After I got it rebuilt, I took it out for flying. (file attached of just before the new first flight) I made a quick up and down for testing and made a few minor settings adjustments. It flew really well. On the second flight after rebuild it was doing great until....

The wings folded. Right smack in half! I was - 50 -100 feet off the ground. I didn't even think I had the engine up very high. The attached file shows the result.

I decided not to rebuild it. :]

Only thing I have to comment on is WHY . . . after crashing his Tower Trainer on his 2nd flight . . . did he move on to a sporty Phoenix Dolphin? If he couldn't fly a trainer why did he think he could fly a sport?

Too bad, that was a gorgeous airplane, sorry for the loss.

For about the same $$, you can buy an Escapade. Did you ever figure out why the wing folded? Hidden damage from the first crash? Bad design of the wing joiner? Given the choice of a Dolphin or an Escapade, which one would you get? Or do you have another plane in mind altogether?

shd3920: I don't know why he did it. I told him to stick with a trainer for a bit longer. Nope - he wanted the dolphin. And he paid for it.

N1EDM: Our best guess is the wing had hidden damage from his first crash. I checked the joiner and the gluing - it all looked sound. The wing snapped at the very end of the joiner beam. Since it cartwheeled on his crash, it makes since that damage was done to the wing.

Oh well. I've got a sport profile .40 now I'm working on.

The old adage "if it's free you get what ya pay for" but Ibet that still sucked! Iam a re-born RC guy, removed fro the game for WAY to long. I see a vast improvement in the engines, but wood is still wood. Ihave just engine tested my purchase (the wife said Icould fly again LOL). Built a new field box...... but Ican see the need for a 5 gallon platic pail!!!

Hope ya did what farmers do, salvage everything that can be re-used!

I guess some planes just aren't meant to fly huh? :\
Also the quote, "All RC planes have a crash date on the tail, but it;s in invisible ink."
Well, this one had two.
Sorry for the loss.
I lost one about 3-4 years back.
It was pretty much confetti and plastic pieces.
Never found the engine.
The reason I havent crashed in 3-4 years.
I haven't flown in about 3 years.
But I'm back with it and flying again.
I just got distracted with alot.
But I'm 18 and ready to start flying again.
I inherited 8 planes after my instructor and friend died of a heart attack when I was 12.
His wife GAVE me everything RC related that was his.
I figure I owe it to him to keep flying, and fix up the 190 I got from him that hasn't flown in 25-30 years.
