trainer engine
Hi guys. First time caller, first time user. I have been out of RC for a while and my 9 yr old son has persuaded me to get back into it. I picked up a good deal on a new 60 size trainer plane. A friend gave me a Super Tiger .51. In your opinions, do you feel that this engine will have enough power to fly this plane? At least as a mild trainer?
Thanks for the help!

RE: trainer engine
A 60 size trainer? Thats unusual most trainers you see today are .40 size. If it was a .40 size I would say no problem but if it is a true .60 size you will need to post a picture or the name of the trainer to get an intellegent answer. If you can't post a picture and don't know the name give us the winspan, length, and weight that would help a lot.

RE: trainer engine
I tried to upload a picture but not sure if it worked. Here's the details:
Wingspan: 70.3 in
Wing Area: 842 sq in
Weight: Approx. 6.5 lbs all up weight
Length: 50.4 in
Engine: Requires 2-stroke .60-.91 nitro (not included)
Radio: Requires 4-channel with 5 servos (not included)
I couldn't find a manufacturer. Maybe a Chinese brand.

I'd say yes. Put on an 11X5 prop and it will not be the fastest bird in the sky but it will pull it. I could get 13,300 rpm with my ST G-51 and that prop (APC Sport) with a slightly rich setting.

RE: trainer engine
I had a trainer with a 68" wingspan it weighed about 6 1/2 pounds, pretty close to yours. I powered it with one of the cheapest .40 sized engines on the market and it was plenty of power to fly it. I say go for it.

A LT40 has a 70in. wing span , and probably weighs close to 6 1/2 lbs, Flies well with a .40 . I think you will be alright with that engine. As Charlie P. said , use a 11x5 prop and it should fly just fine. It won`t be fast , but a trainer is not supposed to be.

That actually looks like a bit of an aerobatic trainer. It apears to have a semi semetrical wing and reduced dihedral compaired to a basic trainer. But that is not what you asked. So yes I would not be afraid to fly that with a .50
