yes..
That pilot is wayyyy sharpe..
Coming down, killing both engines,,
then,, trying to rorate props to reduce damage while coasting down..
Bet he was a tad busy...
Then gets out like was another day at the office..
Excellent job...

Actually some would say that stopping the engines in a case like this is reckless behavior. Doing so takes a relatively safe gear up landing and turns it into an emergency situation. (Landing w/o power qualifies as an emergency, even at an airport.) What if the pilot had to do a go-around for some reason? Without the engines running there are no options. Also it appeared to me that the left engine was being bumped right before touchdown. The pilot should be worried about landing the airplane at that time, not trying to bump the prop horizontal. In reality it probably was the passenger that was hitting the starter, not the pilot. The props still hit the ground which, depending upon the AP, would probably still necessitate an engine teardown.

Just my opinion.

Regards,
Jerry

I was listening to the news reports as it was happening. The pilot didn't cut the engines until he was on a good approach. He had been flying around the airport for almost an hour burning off fueld, and I'm sure discussing options with the air traffic controllers. I think the decision to cut the engines was not to protect the props, but to allow the plane to get rid of even more airspeed, remove a possible source of ignition, and prevent the props from throwing the plane around once they did hit the runway, not to mention the fragments that would have been sent in many different directions. A classic case of not panicking just because you're about to die!

I thought it was a pretty amazing bit of piloting myself.

I say damn good job. Made a great safe landing and saved probably 40-60k on engine overhauls.

since when does a gear up landing become relative safe???? not a full blown emergency???? engines turning or not as soon as that aircraft touches the ground... that's it... your done flying......why not cut the engines on final once it is determined that the runway is clear....removes fuel and an ignition source from the wings where the rest of the fuel is...
It isn't up to the A&P whether you tear down the engines or not.....the Maintenance Manual or the engine maintenance manaul makes that call...it just depends on how far you got to go

oh yes you can do a touch and go without a nose gear......however he had been flying around the field burning fuel...everyone and their brother knew there was a plane in the pattern with gear problems.....unless this airport is different than any I've ever worked at.....so once on final when you can see the length of the runway and all the taxi ways leading to the runway...and have heard what the tower is saying...kill the power....you will be done flying when metal touches pavement anyway.

Your right about armchair quarterback. I'm a 20000 hr ATP pilot and won't make a comment other than I hate it when people make comments and it's real obvious they have no clue.

I once had a mid-air with my Sig pattern plane. The other plane sort of blew up; I had cut his tail off and there were many spinters. I forgot my plane for maybe a long second watching all the splinters come down. Then I rememberd my plane and looked around for it. It was flying away from the field. I grabbed control of it but there was something wrong. It was bucking like a horse and i was barely hanging on. I brought it back to the field but I could not neutralize the stick, as I always do, because all it wanted to do was spin into the ground. I managed to get it near the ground and throttle down then I realized the engine was not running anyway. I was on final holding on for dear life when someone called my name and yelled "you are missing your front gear". Lucky for me my mind was overloaded and I could not comprehed that yelling so I took no action. I held the sticks and made a fairly good landing. The front gear was missing which had shifted the CG, the prop was brocked, one aileron was dangling lose, and the wing had shifted. That worthless yelling at me could have totaled my plane.

Very good landing. Safe and sound passengers. Minimal damage on the plane and the Deck!!!!!
Succesfull all the way down to the last minute since the pilot had altitude to trade with speed!!! Welldone 100%.
