Metric Plywood for Models/ARF's
 

Hi All,

I inherited a Hangar 9 Toledo Special (T.S.) that someone recently crashed and I am looking for a source of metric plywood in 2mm and 3mm thickness. BUSA and Midwest Products show their wood in Fractional Inch dimensions. I measured the ply or liteply of the T.S. and it is actually 2mm for the skins of the fuselage and 3mm for the bulkheads. Having the correct thickness of wood will make the repairs easier to do and much less trouble to conceal.

What we call 1/8" "lite ply" in Model Building is actually 3mm "Bending poplar" used in Cabinet making,, Typically you can get 4x8 or 8x4 sheets anywhere that caters to Cabinetmakers

2mm is going to be hard to find in the market place, I've never seen that before

I have the same trouble, all the ARF planes and kits I have built the last several years had metric sized wood in them.  In most cases I have got by with using fractional sized replacement parts that I made, But I have had re-size metric wood for a couple specific pieces.

I haven't found a source for metric wood yet,..... oh well.

Odd world, I struggle with american kits because I never know which parts goes where and I have no spare wood that's suitable for making nay mods... [:'(]

Or as an alternative to sandpaper, how about laminating something up, say, two thinner sheets with perhaps a think piece of balsa in the middle to build up the thickness...

You can always get 1/64" ply to get the thickness 'just right'.

When a wingsheeting calls for a certain thickness, the last thing on my mind is to sand a whole balsa sheet down. Sanding ply down to the right dimensions sound equally fun to do.

Laminating ply with balsa in the center is a good thing, note sure if that solves this particular problem though. Would three fractional inch measures make for an even 3 millimeter in total...?

Why bother
3 mm = 0.118", 1/8" = .125
Do you think you can really tell the .007 difference, that about the thickness of printer paper

The closest SAE to 2mm is 5/64 aka 1.984mm

The actual conversion of the dimensions is not that hard, but the conversion table was a good one thanks.

For 2 mm you will need 5/64 inch ply to get close, I have no idea if that is common or not but tower doesn't have it for instance.

No, 1/32 increments only,
You can find 3/32 all day long, that's about as close as you'll get, wouldn't take much to sand it flush with 2mm

Suggest you ask the folks at National Balsa .com. Their wood seems to run thin for fractional dimensions.
