Today was not a good day, Very grey dull sky, I took off did a couple laps with my Super Chipmunk, decided the visiblilty wasn't too good, was going to land, but one more quick pass. Not exactly sure what happened, banked over to turn and she headed straight for Mother Earth.

On the Post Mortem I found the gears on the elevator servo stripped. Would explain why it never responded when I tried to pull up. The wing is almost rebuilt, I've decided to incorporate boost tabs on all the control surfaces, as I'm only running standard servo's and the controls are quite large,I've also changed from a plain flap to a Fowler flap, It will be interesting to see how she flys.

Completed rebuilding the Super Chipmunk with a few changes. Enlarged control surfaces, Active boost tabs on all controls. Fowler Flaps, faired in wing roots, Installed wheel pants and changed motor from ST 61 to a ST 75. If the weather clears I will test fly it this afternoon....

Test flight went great..Only a couple of clicks on the elevator to trim it out. Lots of power handles even better than before. The Fowler flaps are a great improvement over the plain flaps it had before, the nose doesn't pitch up as the flaps are extended, it just slows down and pokes along, had it standing still for a while, bit of a headwind. Would recommend them to anybody....

Nice Job!!

Super rework, Bearly!

Did you "roll your own" on the Fowler flaps or use the design that was in MAN (?) a couple of years ago?

I'm sure the others wouldn't mind seeing a closeup or two of the Fowlers if you can do it .... I know I would.

I'm really interested in the changes you made to your flaps. But I really have to be honest....what are fowler flaps??? Could you show us some pics..

thanks,

Rfarias.

Great rebuild job !

I got the hinges from a LHS, but you could easily make them out of lite ply or similiar. The only problem was getting the linkage set up right, as the flap drops away from the wing when deployed,I made up a small drag link between the gold-n-rod connector and the control horn to allow for the drop.

Another photo showing the flaps extended. Fully extended they go to about 40 deg. and really slow the plane down.

What brand flap hinges are those - I've never seen them at any LHS around here.

Super rebuild, I like it when they come out better than before!

Not sure Who's hinges they are, They were in a ratty old package that they had stapled a piece of cardboard to for the price tag to go on, it looked as tho they were laying around quite a while.
I've got another Chipmunk still in the box, I think I'm going to build my own hinges for it, when I clear off a couple of other projects and finally get to it....

Squinting through my bifocals (nothing wrong with the picture, just my eyes), I'm tempted to think that such a rig could be kluged together out of control horns and such.

I'll take the pix into our LHS .... the boss there is rarely stumped on these things.

And thanks very much for posting the pictures ... it's very helpful. I'm thinking of using Fowlers on a camera platform plane that I'll make out of an Eagle 2 this winter.

I know an Eagle 2 doesn't need flaps, but there's all those knobs on the radio .....

Well, as it turns out I didn't need to get to the LHS. A Google search for "Fowler flap hinges" turns up many sources, including this:

Scroll down the page and you'll see you can get the same gizmo for $6.70 US.

and

for a different commercial version.

and

has a home-made Fowler implementation on a Telemaster. Very cool.

It sure looks like the Hobby Lobby hinges are the ones that I used, The set of Robart hinges look pretty interesting, but I wonder if they would have a problem binding after being in use for a while. Quite a difference in price too....
