While shooting some pics at the field yesterday I caught this and didn't even realize it...

I think i have something like this too, but the consequences could have been more painful.
My brother was filming my touch and goes and one of them got a little too close to us. That is a Aircore Colt with .46 swinging 11X6, think yourself....

I think it is a great picture....

as for the blurry/crisp...

follow one plane wiith your camera...another comes into frame from the other direction...
one will be blurry, one will be crisp....

Geeeez....

Now... what we don't know is how far behind the one plane is;):D.....but it is a Great Picture!

My picture is not zoomed in at all. Actually, it is a screenshot from a video. I saved it and have the video somewhere. I should find it and put on my website.

I learned my lesson and never fly close to others...

The funtana is about 56" WS and 56" fuse length....the P-47 is about 80" WS and 70" Fuse length. It does look wierd and disbelieving. It makes the funtana look almost as big as the P-47. I was using a Cannon A80 Camera. I had it set on rapid reshot as I was following the P-47.

I called the guy that was flying the P-47 after I saw the pic for the first time and told him to go kiss his P-47..this was his first flight on this since he bought it at SMS at perry GA a week ago. The pilot/owner was a young man named Ryan Evans... What's more funny is the guy (Ronnie Combs) flying the Funtana was in the pattern. The P-47 was flying WOT on the down wind coming across the field.

People are looking. It is just that the photo is clearly fake, and not really worth commenting on.


As for the thread starting pic, that is damn close. Awesome photo, and glad that something so awesome did not come at the price of another aircraft or two.

My first snap shot is real. First of all, look how blurry whole picture is. Second, if you look closely, you can see a smoke trail behind aircraft.

Also, why would i want to cheat, all i want is that others learn from my mistakes so nothing bad happens. If you do not believe that it is a real picture- don't, but please keep in mind this shot when you do flying close to others.

The blurry quality of the Funtana is not due to movement, it is because of distance. From the looks of your photo, the Funtana is at least 12 feet, and more likely 15-20 feet behind the P-47. One of the few things The human eye and the photo lens have in common is a lack of depth perception viewing objects from afar-the blurry outline of the Funtana is what gives away its actual location, a fair distance behind the P-47 viewed from your shot angle.

If he's focused on the T-bolt as stated earlier then the funtana(quote 56" winspan) could easily be an equal distance in front of the Jug. The blurriness means its out of focus because of relative distance, but relativity is arbitrary, we define the zero point ourselves, in this case the point of focus i.e. the p-47.

Just for the record i am not saying that it is super imposed i am saying it looks super imposed wether due to speed or angle.

I have been involved in photograpy for many years and know that the lens will play tricks on the eye and have used this to my advantage on many occations. The planes may not even be on the same level one could be several feet higher and behind the other due to the closing speed one plane will appear larger than it actually is therefore the size diffence between the planes size can be missleading.

EITHER WAY A GREAT SHOT I DID NOT MEAN TO CALL YOUR INTEGRITY INTO QUESTION.

Here is the explanation, from a high school drop outs perspective.
First off. the funtana is blurred because he said he was following the P-47 with the camera. So the P-47 is nice and clear. The trees in the background are blurred because the camera is moving with the P-47, then the funtana is moving in the opposite direction, which makes it appear to be twice as blurred than the trees. If we knew the shutter speed of the picture, we could then estimate the speed of both planes by measuring the blur of the trees, and the funtana, if the resolution was better.

The funtana appears to be larger because its wings are at more of a tilt, and due to the lack of depth perception, as someone stated, it makes the funtana appear like it has the same wingspan as the P-47.
The P-47 is 1.125" long in the photo, and the funtana is 0.9375" long.
Looking up the fuselage lengths of both planes we come up with 70" for the P-47. and 56" for the funtana .40
We divide 70" by 1.125 and get 62.222.
If we take the 62.222 number we can then get a relative number of length for the funtana 56" / 62.222 = .875
Which is only 0.0625" or 1/16" shorter than it would be if the 2 planes were occupying the same vertical plane.
At 50-100 feet out from where the picture was taken, 1/16" is not very much difference, and that would put the 2 planes pretty much over lapping each other.

If the distance from the camera was 75 feet. Using an angular distance calculator, and a difference of 1/16" apparent size, I came up with 1" separtion on the vertical plane. So yes the funtana was on top of the P-47.

This is all an estimate, and you must take into account the angle of the 2 planes relative to the direction they were flying, that affects the measured size I got from the picture, and the resolution of the picture. I was measuring blurry pixels.

Another note, the P-47 looks super imposed on the picture due to the way the sun is hitting both planes. My guess is the sun was at about a 45 degree angle and up to the right. So the fuse of the funtana is dark because it has no curve to it, and the P-47 has more of a curve to hit, so the sun appears lower. Plus the tilt of the wings on the funtana makes it seem worse.

Great picture, you should be proud!
