Goodbye chipmunk
I was flying my Super Chipmunk a few weeks ago at Rabbit Dry lake. It was acting funny, that when I turned left it would stay left. To correct it I would have to turn right just to get it to center again. It felt like a car with real bad steering. I thought I would go inverted then do a half loop and head back to the field, bad idea. When i did the half loop, the right aileron went full travel past the link rod due to a stripped gear. Needless to say, with the stripped gear it could not pull the aileron back. It kept spiraling and I could not get control even with full oposite aileron and elevator. I throttled back, gave it full up and just watched as it did the screw driver into the ground. It was not a good sound. The front of the fuse and the left wing were totaled. The right aileron was still stuck in the full up position with no damage to right wing. I removed the radio gear and left the carcass and 1/2 jug of fuel for anyone that wanted it. The fuel was no good to me in LA since I am from Canada. I was not going to take the fuel on Air Canada. The funny part to all of this is that I kept the plane at a friends place so when I visit LA I would have something to fly. My trips to LA were getting less frequent and I was considering whether or not to take the plane home or keep it in LA. The decision was made for me. I took the remnants home in a bag. lol!
