I'm not sure about free, but, you can get your self a copy of Photoshop elements 2 or 3 and do a lot with it,and at a very reasonable price. Check e-bay and you can probably get a good price or B&H Photo Video.
Check it out and see what you think.

Check out the Gimp:

www.gimp.org

It might be overkill if you are just looking to do simple editing, but it just as powerful as Photoshop if you have the patience.

You can download a trial copy of paint shop pro, and if you like it, it's only $100 to keep.

I don't know if you are on a PC or a MAC.

For those of us that are truly interested in manipulating images, you will probably end up being a GRAPHIC ARTIST.

Most graphic artists will use MACINTOSH computers. For some unknown reason MAC users, swear by them. In reality, once you are working within the programs (as long as they are written for both PC & MAC) the overall operations are almost identical.

Of course we all know that the expensive programs we refer to is Adobe PHOTOSHOP. (Whatever version you have as long as it is Vs 5.0 or later can be somewhat useable)

Now then, there is a FREE, downloadable, SHAREWARE that is strictly for the MAC called GRAPHIC CONVERTER. (http://www.lemkesoft.de/en/index.htm)

This program will do almost ANYTHING that PS does. It is FREE to try for about a month (I think) after that, it will take a lengthy timeframe to access it, but nevertheless, it is still useable. In fact, this site has a whole lot of things to look at that just might be useful.

I don't want to sound like a broken record but I think looking into the MAC is a worthwhile effort. MACs as a rule ore STUPIDLY priced in comparison to the PC but hang on a second and go to the APPLE website.

Look for the MAC-MINI. if I recall, it is only a BAREBONES 6.5" x 6.5" x 2" CPU, No mouse, no keyboard, and no monitor. BUT, it is only about $500

I know that I have a few extra monitors around, keyboards are pretty inexpensive and so is a mouse. If your monitor is for PC, just get a coversion plug for less that $15

The specs on it are awesome.

Just a few thoughts that I'd like to pass on to you ladies & gentlemen that want a whole lot for very little.

GIMP is the closest to photoshop for doing tons of stuff. But not easiest
http://www.gimp.org/
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/

GIMP Shop runs gimp in a photoshop type User Interface. = easier if you are used to PS.
You still need the Gimp GTK+ files to run; But not the main gimp program.

Photoshop Elements 4 is best home user. But must buy.

Fastone for more basic stuff is good.

I think I'd have to agree that ADOBE PHOTOSHOPE ELEMENTS is by far one of the easiest programs to work with... regardless of the version number.

When it first came out, it was FREE. Really! I'd buy a piece of harware likw , a printer, and inside of the software bundle was a FREE copy of ELEMENTS 1. In fact, you could even register it in your own name.
