NIKON D50...
Hi Guys ...
Whos using one of these ?...how are you finding it ?...I bought one and a couple of lenses yesterday. I'd been using digital format gear for a while but only in the Snapshot standard. This has moved it up a gear. Couple of things i'm not 100% certaian about though. I Know i will miss the DOF prewiew but will i realy need it in the enviroment that this camera will be used.. The optimise image menue seems a bit confusing..but do you use this function that much..? Can you get a LCD cover ?... the lack of this bugs me slightly.... Any comments welcome.. Quality stuff though init.... for something so reasonably priced.
Thaks .Dave.

Hey, Dave,
Check out this site...
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond50/
The D50 appears to be a very good camera, at a great price.
I have a D70 as my third Nikon SLR (Ftn and 6006 film cameras). I am extremely satisfied with the D70, and if I were getting a camera today, would be either the D70s or D50... Good combination of price/features/performance. One thing for sure... The camera has a learning curve, but has tremendous capability

RE: NIKON D50...
Thanks for the link Jim ..
Yeah... third Nikon for me too... An FE with those Series "E" lenses....F601 and Autofocus glass... I must admit to having an affair wit a couple of Mamiya 6x7's ..but they were big girls who demanded a fair bit of attention and work... but they gave me enough material for a "Panel" of 20x16 Ifochrome classic prints at the Royal photographic society. Id forgotten how smooth and slick the Nikon bodies are... Had to go and have a play around this morning even though the weather was a bit iffy...

In regard to your asking to your missing features in regard to your D50
Frankly, I wouldn't loose a lot of sleep over it.
GREAT company to be dealing with!

RE: NIKON D50...
Nice pics. I like the second photo where the sun appears to be reflecting off of the prop.
I was thinking about going to the airfield today though there is going to be a fly-in soon anyway. However, if I took a few pix today--that may be good practice for the upcoming fly-in.
Edit: I made it to the airfield today.

RE: NIKON D50...
How do you guys get the pics to post bigger instead of a thumbnail? I've tried different resolutions and they come up as a thumbnail no matter if it's a 150k size pic or 3mb? What's the trick? Thanks.

You need to "link" the photo instead of upload it as an attachment.
For example:
[img][/img]
Then insert the photo link between the image tags.
After receiving a PM, here is another example:
After the Photo has been uploaded/hosted on a website (even this site using "POST REPLY"),
Right click the mouse over the photo (where ever the photo is hosted)*,
Click on Properties
Right click on address/url
Right click "Select All"
Right click over the address/url once again and click "Copy" to copy the address/url
Click Ok
*NOTE: There is a script used on some websites that will also prevent people from right clicking on photos, so they can't copy or hotlink to the photos.
Then in the message window:
Click "image" and
Then Insert the image address/url between the image tags.
[img]insert address here[/img]

Check out the Nikon D40, truly rocks, can't beat it for the price. Using it and Adobe CS2, not much it can't do.

RE: NIKON D50...
If you already have an older Nikon and wish to use its lenses, then you have to be careful, as the D40 can't use the AF function in some of these lenses. However, if you do not have older lenses already on hand, this one rocks. I also believe that the older type lenses will continue to be used by fewer cameras. The newer lenses have imbedded processors that free up the camera's processors to do other work. However, that's just my opinion.

RE: NIKON D50...
I had some Nikkor AF lens I used with a N4004. It was a shame to let these lens go to waste so I called Nikon and told them I was interested in a D-40 or D-50. They pointed out that the D-40 couldn't use my lens so I got the D-50. Been very pleased with it so far...and get to use my 20 year old AF lens...!

It is a great camera. You will enjoy it more if you buy a good manual for it. Get "Nikon D50", Magic Lantern Guides by Simon Stafford. It is distributed in the UK by Guild of Master Craftsman Publications, Ltd. and is available in the USA from Amazon.com.

RE: NIKON D50...
I have a Nikon D50 and love it! You can't beat the price, photo quality, and not to mention the 1/500th of a second sync speed. Beat that! The D2X dosn't even go that high. It is not a must, but it sure is nice. This dosn't meen that I wouldn't get a D200 if I could afford it though. I am just a kid, so I do what I can. Besides, I have often gotten better photos with my D50 than pros with a 200, D2X, or some other fancy smancy camera that costs 5 times what mine does. Oh and SIGMA lenses are great too. I got a fat sucker that must weigh in at at least 2-3 pounds, 24-70 f/2.8. It is fast! Only $400. That is cheap for such a good lens!

RE: NIKON D50...
Does anyone have any thoughts about the Nikon D80? I was thinking of the D40x but it seems that the D80 has more versatility. Also, how often do you use the burst mode, such as 2 or 3 pictures per second for several seconds? I've always had problems with digital cameras taking pictures of moving planes in that the delay between button press and shutter opening made getting a good picture difficult.

RE: NIKON D50...
Unless I just wanted a small dSLR, I would choose the D80 over the D40x since there are more lenses available for the D80. For a quick comparison, visit NikonUSA.com. Myself, I choose the D200 over the D80 since the D200 is faster--the D200 also writes faster than some of the other brand cameras though the frame rate may be rated the same. I also like the feel of the D200 over the D80 and I started with a D50. My point is that you probably should try any camera out and swap lenses as well before making a purchase since the weight distribution will be different.

RE: NIKON D50...
Jim,
I have the D50 which I think is 2.5 FPS and I've never had to play catch up when taking pics of planes. I mostly take pics of jets and if you want to get quality shots, you need a fast lens. The 70-300 that came with the camera kit just sits collecting dust. If you are looking to use the camera for a lot of moving action, save some money and don't buy a whole kit that gives you a mediocre $150.00 telephoto lens. You won't get the quality shots that you expect. JMO.
Tigger,
What lenses can the D80 accept that the D40 can't? Just curious.
