That is one really cool picture you got there. I would say you used Adobe Photoshop and blurred the background... or at least thats what I would have done. Just kidding that is a really good picture!

Without using the YouTube LINK...I'd guess that you took the shot while the vehicle was BACK-WARDS instead of forward. All of the motion, none of the pain.... Is that correct???? I saw something similar once with a guy "hitting' a golf ball. Motion was back-wards. Rich

I know it's been awhile, but....

Put the car up on a block, middle of chassis out of view of the camera. Run the car so the wheels are spinning, then using slow-sync flash and maybe 1/15 sec exposure or so, move the camera slightly in (ideally) a constant radius from the front (focal point) of the car while shooting. Alternately, if PP was used more heavily, same technique but add a motion blur layer, masking out the body of the car and wheels but motion blurring the pavement and background. Based on the clarity of the background, the aperture was pushed pretty small- f/8 or smaller, I'd say- enhancing the impression of the extended exposure technique.

Now, off to the Youtube answer....

I'll play along, and take a shot without looking at the You Tube video.

There's what looks like some fairly obvious clone brush work going on right in front of the car, directly out from the metal "center" of the bumper. It appears to extend all the way to the bottom of the picture...which would, of course, be the "bottom" of the camera's view.

So...my guess is that there was some sort of mounting rod or something coming from the front of the truck, holding either a video camera or a still camera with a "slow" shutter speed. the picture came from that camera, and has then been photoshopped to remove the mounting hardware via a clone brush.

well as seeing that the car isnt very sharp, its not that hard to guess that he panned the camera in the same direction the car was moving. either out to the side of him or through his legs.
after viewing the exif data with opanda, i see that he used a 1/50 shutter speed with a aperature of 3.5 (f/3.5)
it also says that it was ran through photochop cs2, but if you take more than a second to look at the photo, you will see that the backround motion blur could not be created by a post preduction photo program. the movement not only is horizontal but also vertical too.

although the front end does look suspicious (of having used an extension bar and held a camera) i dont think thats what he did mostly for the reason that it is extremely hard to do a clone job with motion blur and make it look that good

Or you could look at the video, and realized he didn't do any such thing, but instead did precisely as I guessed back in May.

not so much.

hint...it's the same technique that we use when shooting movie productions and was already mentioned above.

hehe...I'll take that as a compliment.

and also in the pavement infront of the car that was cloned, i saw a few spots, but i thought that was just the result of the jpeg file compression after uploading it to the web

I'm just going to guess without looking at that video.

Looking at the background blur, if it was done with panning, it was going at a slow speed. I'm guessing maybe a 1/50 shutter speed.

That's my guess. I usually shoot race panning shots at 1/160th or so.

Since the area in front of the car is blurry, you were in a moving vehicle with the RC car following you. You had a reasonably slow shutter speed, based on the background blur and slight double image of the edge of the tires. But you also used a flash to stop the motion of the car. The reflections on the tires shows that. The double edge of the tire is caused by the slow shutter speed recording the motion of the tire, followed by the sharper edge which is captured by the flash. I'm guessing there was probably some post processing done as well.

Or how I guessed even 8 months before your guess in May!

Its the same technique that we used for shooting full scale cars back in the 90's. Mount the camera on a rig to the car, slow shutter speed, and drive.

Yup...did this with SLRs in the 90s as well...wife (girlfriend back then) was terrified I was gonna loose a camera...lol

Here are a couple of shots of the rig back then. Now I'm using HD GoPros.

It's cool to see it done on RC cars. Much easier with small cameras, unlike the large rigs we needed to use.

Hmm, I wonder how well it will fit on my T-Rex 600

wow, that's really awesome, so beautifully done, I don't think so that it gonna be a very simple so have snaps of Car such liek this, you both have done it brilliantly, This could be doe by small camera's but you need to do some hard word while capturing it, or ot focus on the car and camera on the same time.
