After Effects really isn't for editing your video but more for adding motion graphics and visual effects to video clips. You would take the video clips that you have enhanced in After Effects and use Premiere to product the final video.

Not good. After Effects is a very complicated program. I have played with it a bit, but it's really for adding special effects, and since it's so complicated, you're much better off using something easier.

It's sort of like building a computer from scratch just so you can write up a grocery list instead of using a pencil and paper :D

I strictly use AE for all my editing. The difference between AE and other standard non-linear apps is "layers". It is comparable to Photoshop with a timeline. I have used many editing systems including AVID, Final Cut, Henry, Cumbustion, Inferno, and even Cinderella. After Effects by far is the best way to edit and manipulate clips and create motion graphics and there are a pluthera of sic 3rd party filters available..

As CASTPRO said, it's like Photoshop, but for video.

If you intend to use it just to edit your video, remove the piece of footage where you are picking your nose, add some music and some titles, then you should go with something a little more intuitive and with not-so-many-things-you'll-never-use.

Adobe AE is more suitable for post production in those cases when you need to make composites, perform motion tracking or use plugins as Trapcode Shine (my favourite :D )

I use Sony Vegas for quick & dirty editing, it uses a multilayer layout like the one in Sony Acid (formerly Sonic Foundry Acid)

As an example, this video was post-produced (by these 2 kids) using After Effects for the light sabers and then edited using Adobe Premier.

Beware, big file!
