Default Current draw of 550 size motor???

I am finishing construction of a Great Planes Spectra glider. The kit came with a 550 size cobalt motor, which uses an 8X4 prop. The kit uses a microswitch to turn the motor on and off. I would like to install an ESC in place of the microswitch. I'm trying to determine how much current the motor will draw so I know how large an ESC to purchase. Does anyone know how much current the motor will draw? The motor is rated for 7.2 - 8.4 volts. If I use a LiPo battery, do you think the motor will be able to handle a 3 cell LiPo pack, or should I use a 2 cell pack?

Thanks,
Greg

25 amp ESC should be more than enough. Three cell will be hard on the brushes so will shorten the life.

Not a colbolt motor. just a $5 brushed can. 105 watts. Max 7 cell - 8.4v

8v X 15amp = 120 Watts -you bet- powered glider is about the only thing a 'can' will fly. Use a 8x4 prop. Be happy if it climbs. BUT in the early 90s in a Electra 78" glider with a 1200 mah 7 cell (motor off-on switch with servo) it was lots of fun!

Yep, I'd look at going 2S lipo with a 25A ESC, like the Castle Creation's Phoenix-25.

No, he has a brushed motor so he needs something like a Pegasus 35P (I don't see a 25A brushed CC ESC).

You are absolutely right. That or a Pixie-20.
