Up a Tree Without
 

My wing got caught in a tree. I should be able to get it down tomorrow but I know my lipo will be drained by that time. Is there a device that installs between the esc and battery to prevent this from happening?

yeah there are, there are soft cutt off's and hard cutt off's. Some can just decrase the motor power to 70% or so, some cut out the motor all together and leave the servo's running, and some just cut out everything. Of course there are ones that combine some features and some that are programmable, but I guess that's not really what you are asking =P

I don't realyl know what ones out there on the market are the best, but I have seen several around. Hopefully someone with better knowledge about the subject will reply, and if not I can show you the ones I have seen =)

The low voltage cutoff (LVC) features of the ESC will not prevent the battery from being discharged. Hard and soft cutoff have nothing to do with it. The battery will be always be discharged if left connected to the ESC.

I don't know of a device that does what flyingflipper is asking.

Lipo Shield automatically detects the number of lithium cells in your battery pack at power-up and sets the appropriate cutoff voltage. It then continuously displays the detected number of cells by blinking the “Cells” LED. LipoShield works whether you’re running a BEC built into your ESC, a separate BEC such as ParkBEC or even a receiver pack.

still allows the BEC off of the ESC to run, but it can't power anything since it disconnects it, so it would lower the amp draw considerably, probably even into the micro amps, of course depending on the esc

The LipoShield is a fine product, but it is not designed to help in this situation (plane stuck in tree). The LipoShield is simply a replacement for the low voltage cutoff (LVC) feature of your ESC. You use it with an ESC that either does not have a LVC or with an ESC whose LVC is not correct for lipos.

When battery voltage reaches 3.0V per cell, the LipoShield reduces power to the motor as signal to you that the battery is getting low. It maintains power to the receiver and servos so that you still have control and can land the plane. If your landing happens to be in a tree, power continues to flow to the receiver and servos. If you don't get the plane out of the tree soon enough, the battery will be drained -- and eventually overdischarged -- same as it would without the LipoShield.
