NiCad Storage
I was wondering what the best state to store Nicad batteries is. Should they be fully charged or left in a disharged state using a cycler.

with NiCD's and NiMh's it doesn't really matter. If you leave them at a full charge, half charge, or something like 1.1 or 1.0v per cell because they have a self discharge rate that's pretty high. If you store them for 3 months or so, they would all be pretty much at the same state of charge anywho =)
The thing that helps them is when you store them, store them at a colder temp, like the fridge or something. Alot of them can go down below freezing, so I guess you could store them in the freezer, but personally I would store them between 40 and 55 if you can =) |

Mrasmm is completely right. Within just a matter of weeks or months, they will be completely discharged, so it does not really matter what you leave them as. And also, storing them in a fridge is a good idea if possible.

NiCd`s are rough gadgets. As already stated they can be stored full or empty and still be brought back to life after a long while.
But the "recommended" way to do it is to discharge NiCd before storing. NiMH should be partial discharged before storing. NiCd and especially NiMH should be waked up from storing in the same way as you threat new batteries. A slow charge at 1/10C for 14 hours. Then a discharge to check capacity. If the capacity is good charge in a normal way, with peak detect, and go flying. If the capacity was lower than expected run the battery through 2-3 charge/discharge cycles. If the batteries are healty their capacity should increase up to expected level. NiCd usually responds good to 1-2 wakeup cycles. NiMH might need 5 cycles. Especially the high-current NiMH`s. |

I have learned that NiCd`s should be discharged before storing, learned this already back in the 70`ties and this is still true. This have worked perfect for me, and I have in fact 20 years old NiCd-batteries still working. Prove enough for me that I do it the right way. Don`t remember where I did read this 30 years ago, but I often find this confirmed on a lot of web-sites and books. If you are interested in some few hints: - This is the recommendings in Gibbs Guides, which are guides with all the right answers. Recommended! - And just a short searching on the web-sites of Schulse, which are top-of-the-line manufactorer of chargers and a lot of other gadgets say, in a VERY clear way that storing NiXX partial charged is a safe way to destroy the batteries. Those are people I rely 100% on, these are serious people. What is meant by 'storing' the nicad?
1. Just left sitting (discharged) 2. above + in frig 3. 1 or 2 + left on a trickle charger such as Lil' Trickler Thanks. |
