Default Which tail upgrade for CPP?

First off, I want to thank many of you here for fueling my interest in RC Helis. Ok, maybe it's more of a growing addiction.

I bought my first rc heli, CP Pro, a month ago. And in that time I have gone through RADD's flight school a couple times. I am hovering and making circles to both directions. Man, it is fun!

So far, I have upgraded it with:

Century Main gear and shaft
Superskids v2
Dual Heatsinks for main and tail motors
Custom Painted Canopies

So, yesterday, coincidentally, I took the training wheels/gear off and was enjoying the new stability. At roughly half way through the battery, I saw the tail start jerking side to side about 30 degreees. And then I lost it to a slow piroette right. As i tried to bring it down to the best of my abilities, it unfortunately caught a straight line right into the back of my house. Missed the window

Besides needing to replace the spindle, again, and of course blades and flybar, one of the servos is trashed. OK, no problems there. But, no doubt, the tail motor is shot.

My question is which upgrade for the tail? Twin motors or a Direct drive motor? Seems that the twin motors would be heavy. But I would love to hear from people that have either or both.

I did a DD upgrade 3 weeks ago and pretty much prefer it over the dual tail motors that I used to have.

Outfox,

I have used both types of tail motor mods. I like the GWS DD tail mod the best. I am 41 flights (almost 6 hours) into this mod and it is flying nice.

I bought the ducted fan edf-40h and extracted the motor out of it. I also used the prop and prop adapter, as listed in bladecprepair. I have used a stock 9t motor and a 3800 BL main motor and the tail performs great with each motor. It holds pretty darn sweet, even with the increase in headspeed with the bl motor. The tail runs a lot warmer in the BL set up. For about $20.00 in parts, this mod is put together. Use the CN-12RXC motor for this mod.

Compare the $20.00 full price of the DD mod to a dual tail set up. If you buy the microheli dual tail housing, that is about $25.00. Then you have to get the carbon fiber tail stand at another $11.00. Then two eflite 9.99 motors (19.98) or if you use the esky tails 6.30 each (12.60). Boom, your up to about $56.00. Yes the tail holds nice, but you pay for it in weight. The tail is way heavy, causing you to really place a lighter battery far up on the battery holder.

Being able to compare both, the DD mod wins it for me. I like the weight, durability, flight characteristics and total cost of this mod.

I went with the duel motors due to the local hobby store stocks them. I do plan on trying the DD later.

that's all you need to go DD besides an x-acto knife, soldering iron, & rosin core solder. if the wires are too short you'll also need about 2" of wire and heatshrink tubing to lengthen them.
