RE: I Got A T-Rex

Heli Harry,

Oh the Rex flies so very nice. It is powerful and very smooth. I have the 450SE with 65's for servos and just a Telebee gyro. Although the Telebee works great, I would like to fly one with a 401 gyro.
Hey guys,
My T-Rex has the Telebee gryo also, couple questions. On the Telebee, how do I adjust the sensitivity? If I went for the 401 gyro, is it just unplug the Telebee and plug in the 401? Or are there some adjustment to be made with the 401?

Thanks,

Dave / Choppersrule

RE: I Got A T-Rex

drphoto:

The silicone oil works great. It is very clean and light, so it does not attract dirt and grime like some other oils. I also use Rem Oil (made for firearms) on the head, main gear bearings and tail slider (none on the belt). This is in a spray form that contains teflon, which is also clear and light. It goes on with a spray straw and also does not attract grime.

I did not see the post in the rex section, I guess I have been too busy trying to get my CP Pro to fly like my Rex. I upgraded to the helidirect 3800kv BL motor / 9t pinion and boy the headspeed increased. It was sucking about 90-100 mah / minute of flight, which I thought was a little excessive. Well, a tail motor went out on the dual tail mod and I was able to land safely due to one still running. This might be the reason for the excessive power draw. I'll see when I get some replacement motors. I am also going to try out a 8t pinion.

Headspeed on the BL Pro is high, but I still think I manage it inside the house. With the Trex inside, all I can reall do is hover and slightly float it around. Boy, if there was some sort of mechanical failure with the Trex inside, there would be some hell to pay from my wife. I'm sure it would really damage something.

choppersrule:

Sensitivity of the gyro can be changed at the RX. There is a gain pot on the gyro itself, but most of the sensitivity should be worked with the Rx. Seems like you should be able to put the 401 right in there. Like everything else, I'm sure you would have to do some fine tuning to get it dialed in.

To all who are pondering getting a Rex:

I think the Trex 450SE is worth all of the extra coin. I'm sure the other Trex models fly nice also. If you can hover or fly a CP or CP Pro, flying a Trex is EASY.

RE: I Got A T-Rex

bpd282,

Thanks for the info on the gyro adjustments, I'll have to take a look see later tonight. Have to balance the books, you know how those bill collectors are!

Your right, if you can hover a CP or CP Pro, the Trex is EASY. First time I spooled up my Trex, it was kinda scary with all the power that bad boy has.

Drphoto & Bpd282,

I'm a lubrication-holic, I lube all the critical parts after every 10 flight or so. Man, it makes a difference. (That's on my CP and CP Pro). Never thought to lube the belt on the Trex. I'll have to give it a shot too.

I've been using a Teflon Silicone lubricant made by Dupont, it's in a spray can with a tube thingy, just like WD-40. I got mine at Menards, it was, $3.98 for a 10 ounce spray can. I use in on the helis, but also all around the house, and my cars. This stuff is super slickery. I saw it posted in another tread months ago, thought I'd try it and it works fantastic.

If I ever get to where I can put the CP where I want it when I want it, I expect there's a T-Rex in the future... but I'm not gonna hold my breath on that. :(

Tall Paul,
With all your ingenius ideas, I thought you'd be flying two Trex's at once.:)

You've heard this a zillion times I'm sure, the T-rex is much easier to fly than the CP.
I just bought one about a month ago and it flys great, very stable compared to the CP and the CP Pro(I have both).

RE: I Got A T-Rex

My CP Pro wore out. The ball joints are so bad in the head that it was bouncing 1-3 feet the last few flights. I just installed the super skids too.

The upgrade was the T-Rex SE. WOW... Easier to fly and awsome machine.

I want to eventually fix up the CPP though. I liked being able to fly in my house. I hovered the Se in the basement, but I don't dare fly circuits. I'm pretty sure the main rotor would be like an axe through drywall.

Is the metal swash plate worth getting for the BCP??? I was thinking of getting the metal swash, and installing T-Rex ball joints through out. I think I'll use my 9303 with it though too. The electronics will have to be replaced, but I have the Rx & ESC. Maybe I can get a used Futaba 240 gyro. I hate to stick a 401 on this thing.

RE: I Got A T-Rex

Sagg555,

Dittos for me too, I've got the CP, CPP and a T-Rex. Haven't flown the T-Rex must, weather here is getting nasty this time of year, windy and rainy all the time... I had the metal swash for the CP, works very well and looks cool too. Probably my fault, after a crash, I had to remove the link from the swash plate and pulled the ball right out of the swash. No way to fix it, didn't want to spend the money on another one. Went back to the stock swash.

I going to get the Blade CX2 when they come out later this month. It'll pass the time this winter and be a lot of fun.

Are you guys getting Trex's AMA members or planning on joining? I'm going to, when I get mine flyable. The insurance coverage is a good deal. An out of control Rex could do a lot of damage. Yeah, I suppose there's homeowners....but I wouldn't want to hope they'd pay. Plus, most sanctioned flying fields require AMA if you ever want to try that.

I was a member when I was a teen back in the 70's (flying my badass .60 powered UglyStik.)

Drphoto,

Ya know, it never really crossed my mind, however, I'll be checking into it. When I flew planks in the late 80's, early 90's, I flew at a sanctioned field, and as you mentioned, it is required there.

In 1970, I was 24 years old, holy cow!, I'm gettin' up there.

Hey Dave,

In addition to my job as a photographer, I also work for an institutional pharmacy that supplies nursing homes. The one thing we have to look forward to as we get older is lot's and lot's of narcotics!! :) We sell truckloads of percocet.

I sent an email to Horizon and suggested if they wanted a good PR deal, they should look at giving nursing homes BCX's. The worst part of nursing home life would have to be the boredom. Micro heli's could be a great diversion.

Remember, I got into this because I bought my elderly father a Honeybee FP. I should have gotten him a CX. Might do that for Xmas.

doc

RE: I Got A T-Rex

I just started flying these helis a couple of months ago. I've been flying the planks for ~6 years and thought I'd give the heli thing a try with the BCPP. I'm glad I did because it's really gotten me excited about RC'ing again. I love aerobatics with planes, but the chalenge of just learning to fly helis just gets me going. I put two full 10+ minute hovers on the rex tonight in the basement. The 2nd one I panned around a little and made a couple of turns. I'm glad I have a huge basement, but I can't wait till tomorrow when I can wring it out a little at the field / or in the yard early.

Speaking of the field, I am an AMA member. It's great for planes. I'm not sure how the heli will pan out at the field for me yet. Most of our members dislike helis and there's an "unsaid ban" on them there. I checked into our written rules and have made sure they all know I've been flying for these couple of months. Now I'm going to push it a little and take the heli down to the field. Back to the AMA... I don't know what's in store for the AMA. It's the only organization around and most clubs require you to be a member. The reasoning is for landowner liability and to some extent, your secondary insurance (they'll only cover incidents what your homeowners won't cover).

RE: I Got A T-Rex

Shag,

Sound like the whole "skier" vs "snowboard" thing The oldtimers just don't like the new kids. (seems weird to say that at my age) The cool thing about heli's is you don't NEED the field. But it would be fun to go, if you can find one that is heli friendly and have real people to interact w/.

The best part of any hobby and this online stuff is meeting new folks. One of my other interest is high end audio. I belong to a forum for that, and have met a number of people in the region and several have become really good friends.

Hopefully your local group will embrace the heli thing.

So does AMA insurance only kick in, if homeowners won't pay? Even if that's the case, for the relatively low premium, I would think it would be a good backstop. Of course, I'm not much of a business analyst. Maybe not worth it?

joe

Drphoto,
LOL, nursing homes... ...... Well to be honest, if we don't die first, we'll all be in a nursing home eventually. Hope I live so long.
I feel extemely forturnate, I'm heading on 61 years. Don't take any medication at all (narcotics!!:D) And don't wear glasses either.
Still the same weight as I was 35 years ago, +/- 5 pounds, depending on the time of year. Luckily, my brain hasn't grown up yet.:D

If you remember, I replied to your post, about you getting involved with your dad, and respected you for doing that. Family is key, then everything else. I'm spending the weekend with my dad, he's 86. I got him envolved in computers about 5 years ago, and now he's a computer geek.

Best of luck to all, with your helis, they are just great (and expensive[X(]).

Later,
Dave / Choppersrule

RE: I Got A T-Rex

I don't know about the AMA... If you go to the planes section here and look under AMA, that entire forum is full of hysteria and paranoia. I suppose it doesn't really represent the AMA, but if you look at a membership application / look at the on-line stuff with AMA, there are all kinds of clauses. The main one for me, is that the "flying site" must be an "approved" flying site.

I'd reccomend you get the AMA Membership. It is probably good piece of mind, unless you're out in the middle of nowhere. I'd check into it though, if you're park flying, they might stick you with "you should have been flying at the local club field' thing, but there and again, that might be my paranoia. There's also some "new huge deductable" of which I've never fully checked out. I suppose I should.

I think my club will accept heli flying for what it is. It's not like it's anymore dangerous than flying airplanes. And it's not like I want to go careening around with my Rex recklessly at the field after dropping a good $800 on it either. It'll all work out.

Still can't wait for tomorrow!

RE: I Got A T-Rex

I believe the AMA insurance only covers you if you fly at an approved AMA site. It is the same here in Canada with the MAAC, the insurance is only good if tou fly at approved sites. If you fly in your yard or the park and hit someone or something then you are not covered by the MAAC insurance.

Heli Harry, Think I'm going to have to join you in the TRex group. I was at a Heli Fun Fly today, and now know that I'm going to the Trex 450 XL as a next step. In fact, I'm going to sell my new CP Pro without even flying it. I'll just stay on the sim and w/ the CP until I get the Trex going. So now I have a truely new CP Pro never flown, just spooled up once to make sure it worked for sale. Look for my ad. Doc

When you get your T-Rex if you can get the SE as it will save you money in the long run.

It comes with all the upgrades right out of the box.

Yes it cost more initially but your not buying twice

Have fun

Good God... If I count everything up (9303, Salvaged Batterys, Salvaged 45Amp ESC, etc), I'm in to this thing for pretty close to ~$1400. My justification is that I had that big old battery laying around and the esc doing nothing, plus the 9303 was only being used by one aerobatic plane, now it has a dual purpose!

Just don't spend the rent money!

Shag,

Just being smart here, you can justify food, clothes, water and stuff like that. You can't justify the cost of a hobby it's just something you want to do, not need to do. Well, I could be wrong there, I'm addicted to this heli craze, can't get away from it.:D

Holy Moly!!! In the last year, with all the buying and selling of helis, and crashes and parts, batteries, chargers, a zillion set of blade, upgrades, modification, and who knows what else. I'm approaching 4 grand, not a typo error, four grand. Whew, when will it stop.

My T-Rex will be the last purchase for a while. I'm gonna upgrade my Raptor G2 this winter, if Santa Claus lets me.

Hey, it's all a bunch of fun and a great hobby, very challenging to say the least.

Take care and keep it from crashing,

Twister,

I said the same thing about my wallet, STOP, STOP. Well, I looked at the T-Rex for several weeks and just couldn't make up my mind.
Thinking, hey, you already have four helis, you don't need an expensive T-Rex. Then one night, my fingers got real itchy and for some odd reason, my clicking finger hit the "Submit Order" button, 4 days later the UPS guy has this big box for me.

Try it you like it, join the T-Rex craze.. Seriously, the T-Rex, regardless of which model you care for, T-Rex's are the most popular heli and is World Wide.

Hang in there and have a good time,

Dave:

I know what you mean... I don't know exactly how much I've gone through this year... Probably something on the order of $2k - 3k... BCCP, Funtana 90, the 9303, a new H-9 Extra 260 Airframe (totalled the original in the spring), parts for the Revo, and I'll be (hopefully) buying a Raptor 50 SE or TRex 600 from Santa (I hope). Both boys will more than likely get Blade CX2's. Course that doesn't count fuel, all the covering, BCCP parts, batteries, servos, etc. Not that I'm complaining. I love this hobby to death, and the helis are more challenging than anything I've driven or flown yet!

Shagg,

I'm in the same boat, love the helis. I know I mentioned this before, but I have to get the CX2 for winter. I had the Cx, sold it, and now miss it. It's just a fun, relaxing thing to fly. That will put me back up to 6 helis. Guess I'm addicted.:D
I agree, the helis are much more challenging. I flew the planks, but, no comparison to the heli world. Ya can't fly a plank in the house, garage or in your backyard, unless you have a huge backyard.

This old man is going to bed,;)

RE: I Got A T-Rex

I flew my 40 sized (the 1st plane I ever bought mind you) plank in the back yard here in OH. If it wasn't for the rough yard, I'd still have it. Just too bumpy... Plane would bounce then tip stall. Managed to get it flying several times before its demise though. I ended up finding out that there's a AMA club only 2.5 miles south of me, so I fly there now. Still haven't flown the heli there yet though. Maybe this weekend if I'm lucky.

I've 4.5 acres, and the neighbor has 10, so there's pleanty of room. I have to tree dodge every once in a while though. For helis, it's great. I might have to get something like a GP Yard Stick for slow flying in the backyard. I did have one of those before, and used to fly it in parks / ballfields in Salt Lake, UT. Had a mini funtana, but it was way too fraile for the backyard.

In Doors for planes is not my speed. With 5 kids, the indoor plane thing just wouldn't work out. Too fraile, and way too expensive. The first time it landed on the floor away from me, is about the time my 2 year old would get it out from under me, that that would be the end of ~$400.
