Shogun 400
hello all
I notice there is not a big following on the Shogun 400 ?? I am just getting mine into the air but do not see a lot of posts about the Shogun. Why is that? am I heading in the wrong direction? Is it a waste of time, money (lots) and effort (lots) to get and keep this bird flying? My wife supports my hobby but is not happy when I move up or over to a better rig so I am looking at cutting my losses now before I spend more. I was eyeing the all aluminum upgrade I saw on Ebay for the Shogun. So..........maybe not? |
RE: Shogun 400
The T-Rex seems to be the direction a lot are heading
|
RE: Shogun 400
I don't know this heli, but this ad has been in the local Buy&Sell paper for weeks if not months now.
Shogun 400 heli, ARF, brushless, hubdave belt drive & full CF frame, extra blades, belt, spare parts, exc cond, $250obo. Tel: 780‑986‑8709 >> See Details I dunno why it has not sold, it seems most sell pretty fast in that paper. |
RE: Shogun 400
Hmmmm
How much of the Shogun stuff can I use in the T Rex ? I do know that a lot of Shogun guys stepped up to the T Rex but I havent followed them close enough to know if it worked out for em. T Rex is bigger? I know bigger is easier. Better built? More support? Well, gotta be cause they don't make the SHogun V1 400 its now a V2 cause of upgrades. Geeeesh...Heli_Harry........I sound like I am answering my own question. lol Guess maybe I better look into the T rex a little more before I spend too much money. See I got the Shogun 400 (base kit) from a good freind a year ago (gift). Then spent around $300 for all the "stuff" that goes with it. I already had the Eclipse 7 TX/ RX anticipating my getting my Century Hawk Sport in the air. Still havent gotten that far in life. I say break what is cheaper first. lol and believe me, I have. ;-) I need to find some dudes that did the Shogun thing and moved on to the T Rex or ? I only have the net or RC Universe for this kind of info cause there is absolutly nothing around here unless you want to do like 60-85 mile trips. The so called local hobby shop (38 miles away) said to me " oh, Helicopters? we dont carry them or parts because they are too hard to fly". No sh%t ????? Can you imagine a hobby shop making that statment? So thats the attitude up here. I say try it, ya gotta try. "Never Give Up" !!! know what I mean? My wonderfull wife says "sometimes I wish you would". lol Ever fly a $300 glider into a tree and then smoke the speed control? yup, done it. If it flies, I can crash it. |
RE: Shogun 400
I just checked and my LHS carries stuff for the Shogun.
http://www.greathobbies.com They do mail order bigtime and have a headquarters in Stratford,P.E.I, which, though cross border, I thought might be of some use. I have an Esky Honeybee CP2 which I eventually figured out (not the brightest) is the same as a Blade CP. Well, i didn't figure it out, I read it on a message board. All of a sudden i could find parts. I have no idea, but I hope you have similar luck with your heli. |
RE: Shogun 400

RE: Shogun 400
toywizard...I'm an exception to the rule I had a T-Rex and sold it for a Shogun V1 at the time and it flew way better, so I eventually upgraded to Shogun V2 flew even better since it has a belt. I can find tons of parts for my Shogun on the net. My favorite for Shogun parts is www.RCHOVER.com, prices are reasonable and they ship fast. Heck they even throw a few pieces of candy with your order (for real). You can also get parts from www.HobbyPeople.net . Before selling my Shogun V1 since I had a V2, I bought the belt drive upgrade for it for $60.00 from HobbyPeople.net.
I think it's a preference and probably since there is no local support you can pretty much go in any direction. I love flying my Shogun and I have HoneyBee CP2 (Similar to a Blade CO Pro), and a JR Venture .37 Nitro Heli. I also fly with the a Hitec Eclipse and love that as well. I don't let other people's pocket and preference influence what I use. I do my research and make an educated decision. I would suggest the following: Aluminum Swashplate (more precision) Brushless Motor (3200-3600kv) Lipo Battery (11.1v 1800 or higher with a C Rating of 15C or higher) Tail Boom mount for the Gyro and Tail Servo |

The above will be a great upgrade for sure. Interesting you went from a T Rex to a Shogun. Not having any local support for myself, I rely on the net and most start out small and work up bigger n bigger. I don't really care about bigger, I just want to have a nice solid dependable back yard machine. I play solo anyway so no one to impress but me and the wife. lol, I have a whole workshop full of "educated decisions". Thank you for your help. Maybe I will just stick with my Shogun or maybe up to the V2 with belt drive. |
RE: Shogun 400
So HeliTB
I have been researching more and I would like to know why did you not like the T Rex? And Why do you like the Shogun V2? I feel I need to at least upgrade to the V2.... What are the advantages of the belt drive over shaft drive? I would think Shaft drive would be more stable however I am concerned about gear wear. |
RE: Shogun 400
My wonderful wife just snagged me a Shogun V2 ........so I will get a shot at trying out the belt drive tail. Better? or should I get some spare belts?
I like the wider stance of the landing gear and the extended battery tray. I think it has a servo mount on the tail boom too but I will know for sure when I get it. $129 free shipping. DOn't think I can kick on that. Plus wify approves...........what else is there this close to Christmas? ;-) |
RE: Shogun 400
Shogun V2 vs. V1
V1 the tail shaft will strip at this slightest rotor strike requiring it to be replaced. Also the motor can strip the tail gear. V1 was just as stable in hover, but I got tired of changing the tail rotor shaft. V2 comes with the updated ball links on the rotor head a good improvement. You will not be dissapointed. The parts for the Shogun were a little less expensive. Shogun over T-Rex, first off I couldn't get the tail to hold at all with GY240. Second, I love to be different. Everyone is flying the T-Rex so I wanted something different. That was good price for the Heli. |
RE: Shogun 400
So HELI TB
I got a dummy question.... Had a ball today trying to get the Shogun to hover. A little windy but my probs are my own..lol Good thing I have spare blades...Now more coming. lol I thought my rpm should wind up a lot more before the blades start to pitch for climbing. Now in a nitro the motor spools up to speed and then you bring up the collective, i.e. the motor speed staying constant. Now a dummy question.....why don't you do that in Electrics? or maybe I should be? |
RE: Shogun 400
scareintheair "" I just checked and my LHS carries stuff for the Shogun. "" Thanks for the info and link !! :) |
RE: Shogun 400
toywizard...That's an easy question. Electric has instant power where a nitro has to engage a clutch after it speeds up before the rotors begin to turn.
I'm an old r/c car racer and have raced both electric and nitro this is true of the cars as well. But I know what you mean since I have both an electric and nitro Heli. What you need to do is adjust your pitch curve for normal mode: -2 low stick, +2 mid stick and +7 high stick idle up 1: -4 low stick, +2 mid stick and +7 high stick idle up 2: -7 low stick, 0 mid stick and +7 high stick |
RE: Shogun 400
ahhh ok
I think I am understanding this better. Thats right too about spooling up,,, I should have just thought about my T Maxx vs E Maxx and the clutch. THis is the first time since I bought my Eclipse 7 that I have acually programmed in any settings. Hardly used it in three years. Mattter of fact I foolishly lost a battery cause of letting it sit unused too long. My brain fade. Too many toys. So now I am crash coursing the radio stuff again. THe plane settings were a peice of cake but the heli takes more to get used to or to understand. |
RE: Shogun 400
No problem...I understand about the brain freeze. I absolutely love my Eclipse 7. Is yours QPCM capable?
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. |
RE: Shogun 400
Thanks, I really do appreciate your help and all others too.
QPCM.........I dont believe I have that because I never see it come up in the menu. Other than that, how do I tell? I think I can have mine upgraded to it if I send it in but as the moment don't really know if it would be an advantage for the faster responce for me. I mean its only going to be as fast as I am..........oh crap, I am in trouble. lol I love my Eclipse 7 also and have barely scratched the surface of what it can do. I really need to get the heli portion of it figured out cause thats my latest whim. lol Before this I used it on foamies and I love that too. I usualy use one of my Futaba's or my Airtronics is a favorite for dubbing around with planes. I have 7 or 8 other radios including a couple of the older "illegal" wide band AM. Even a nice old 5 channel futaba. (of course thats why it was such a good "deal") A bunch of backyard 2 & 3 channel proprietary TX units, usualy from planes gone by or (by by) lol Anyone need a TX? I am afraid I knew more about this radio the year I researched and purchased it than I do now. Hmmm lets see breakfast? this morning? hmmm yes I will have some. oh, sorry its lunch time? oh, I don't remember what I had for breakfast. lol www.twwrc.homestead.com/current.html NEW PICS !! |
RE: Shogun 400
QPCM is only needed if you are going to use a QPCM receiver, otherwise as you stated it's not worth the hassel of shipping to Hitec. It works great in PPM/FM mode.

RE: Shogun 400
HeliTB
Another dummy question :o Now I thought I saw in the instructions that it said the swashplate in the TX should be set to "Normal", but Looking at it, the linkage looks 120° off from each other to me? hmm, I gotta pull out the Hawk and see how that one is liinked up. of course its only two servos............so it cant be 120° cause you would have one on each side, ya, I think thats right. |
RE: Shogun 400
ahhh
Just found it in the Hitec manual...that makes sense now. Should be set to "normal" because I am not using 3 point servos to control the swashplate. |
RE: Shogun 400
ok, another one.
Is "Idle up 1" & "Idle up 2" the same as ST1 & St2 And if it is.......what is ST 3 ? |
RE: Shogun 400
toywizard...Yes they are. ST3 is your throttle hold, if you set your throttle hold to -4, you can use the Flt Mode switch on the right side of the radio as an on-off switch. I turn on the radio and then flick this switch and plug in my Heli with no fear of is taking off on spooling up, once I get back to my radio I flick the switch off and I'm ready to fly. I always flick this switch before I unplug the Heli for safety, but you have to set it first.
Now, if you are using the Eclipse for a nitro heli, then the throttle hold will be set (normally +10) to keep the engine at idle so you can do an autorotation landing. Been doing some research with my Heli to improve performance and I have found some good information. Check this out, just about every question imagineable answered. http://www.helitown.com/Shogun.html After reading some of the answers and trying them out, I found out if I set my throttle curve as follow: Normal 0,35,85,inh,100 ST1 85,85,85,inh,100 ST2 100,inh,85,inh,100 My motor and esc are barely warm after 5-6 minutes of hovering, the more voltage you send to the motor makes it's easier for the motor to turn, which in turn means less heat and amps. Most electric motors like to be ran at about 80%-95% of full throttle. |
RE: Shogun 400
Ok....that is making more sense now....
I will go check out the link and start absorbing, lol Hope my brain dont fade out now...it will explode! lol I really do appreciate your help. |
RE: Shogun 400
Oh my god what a wonderful link!!!!
I will be there for quite a while to say the least. Its like that missing link. Of course all my questions are not right up front so I acually got to read a bunch. lol No really great stuff, great info Thanks again. I am taking the next couple of weeks off to "veg out"from work and it will allow me to "learn n play". Probably the first real two week vacation I have had in 11 years. for me anyway. usualy when I take a vacation, I spend it adding onto my house or other projects along those same lines. This vacation has nothing planned so I know what I WANT to do. Love it. Life is too short anyway. |
RE: Shogun 400
That's great. Here are a couple of pitch curves. I did a lot of testing to see what works best. But you must set your pitch at 0 degree at 1/2 stick. What you do is set the ST2 pitch curve first as shown below, because it's linear (note: you should always set your minimum and maximum pitch using a linear pitch curve). After that can move the switch to Normal and ST1 and plug in the numbers. Once you plug in the numbers use your pitch gauge while in Normal to see if at 80% of full throttle you are at +4 Degrees. Remember to unplug your motor before seeting your pitch, we would not want the blades to hit you.
This curves give me about high stick +9 to low stick -9 degree of pitch and 0 degree at 1/2 stick. I know the book says +7 to -7, but I can eek out another 2 degrees, because I'm using an aluminum swashplate. Normal 30,45,50,55,100 ST1 0,40,50,60,100 ST2 0,25,50,75,100 |
