I put a evolution .36 nt on my J3. Everyone said not too. I have close to 75 flights on it off the water, and haven't had any issues other than maybe a little to much power. Its a nice flying plane with no really bad tendencies in my opinion.

i have had the power 25 since december but i have just put a order in for the piper. so i will post some pics when it is built . i have the flycamone aswell so i hope to get some good in flight film. i will be using 2 hs81 and 2 of the newer hs82 on the wings. and the EF 60A ESC

well the servos are to small so i have made a ply mount. also the esc is to big so i will have fun trying to keep it out of the way of the lipos

My name is Dave, and I am another proud owner of the E-Flite J3 Cub. :D Alls I can say is E-Flite did there homework with this plane. This is my first float plane and I have been flying for almost 30 years. I took my first test flights from hard ground earlier this week, today was the maiden on the floats. This plane balanced perfect from the beginning and even after I installed the floats still balanced perfect. The flights on the floats required absolutely no trim from when I was flying it on the wheels, that is remarkable in my book. This little plane is going to be one of my favorites, besides it fits in the back of my SUV, fully put together, just right. I am impressed with this one so much I want to get the Beaver next and put it on floats.

well i have had the kit 3 months and it is finished. it would of been sooner but had to many other things going on. i will be filming it.s first flight so if it all goes wrong everone can have a laugh.

I have it and I love it. I have only used it on floats and I have dozens of flights on it. I had one bad crash on it two summers ago due to a stripped servo which I replaced with a metal gear servo. This winter I plan on putting skis on it and flying it on a frozen lake.

It's a great plane to look at and fly although the floats add some interesting flight charateristics.

Hello J-3 Cub owners. Santa has brought me an early gift and I will be building my Cub Xmas day after the kids see it under the tree. I will be using the Power 25 motor with an Electrifly 45a ESC, powered by a 4s2p brick build 15c TP 4200mah lipo (13oz....barely fits). I'll using the JR MN48 servos and 12x6e prop recommended by E-Flite. No plans to do floats yet. I want to master ground ops first. I have read this entire thread.....great tips. I hope the big battery works out CG wise (its only 2 oz more than the stock NiCad also recomended by E-Flite). If its too heavy I will parallel wire two 20c 3s1p 1800 mah lipos. That configuration comes in at 11 oz and change. Will keep you updated.

I really like this plane but I am a "glow" only guy . I Have a brand new in the box K+B sportster 20 ( with flush mount) and want your opinion on trying that .. Thanks for all the info and input !

Such a sweet looking plane. I built mine last August and have been flying it since. Probably got 30 or so flights on her now. I'm picking up floats tomorrow at the LHS before they're sold out for summer like last year! ><

A few words of advice to new ppl building/flying this plane:

I MUCH prefer using a single 2250mah 3s lipo rather than 4200 or 2 packs together. My batteries aren't even warm after a hard 12 minute flight on one 2250mah lipo so there's 0 reason to be carrying the extra weight. (I did add a tiny amount of lead under the cowl to balance it). The weight savings is huge by using 1 lipo, which not only makes this plane fly much much better, but it also takes away all it's bad tendancies. I've even TRIED tip-stalling her and I have to be flying slower than a walk to do so! lol.

I prefer an 11x8 prop to the 12x6. The extra watts is nice when you want it, plus I've read it wont strike the water when on floats. 12x6 isn't bad per say, but it seems too torquie in the air and not fast enough for some awesome aerobatics. I find the 12" thrust sometimes throws the plane off when doing aerobatics which sometimes catches you off guard! The 11x7/8 don't do that.

Program in some differential (to limit adverse yaw effects) and expo to make 'er smooth!

One question I was going to ask before I pick up the floats, is it worth it to hook up the float rudder? I read one post where a guy said it's not worth it as it doesn't really make a difference taxing on water.

Ive ordered the plane and need to fugure out what size servo to put in the wings. Can someone measure their ailerons (LxW). They look to be about 15 inches by 2 inches, but I cant tell. With the Power 25, whats the max speed of the plane? I know what size servo the manual suggest, but we all know that ailerons dont need the same amount of torque as an elevator. I think I can get away with somewhere between 14oz and 24oz on the ailerons.</p>

Take a look at this [link=http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=544402&page=58]Cub[/link] thread on RC Groups. I have over 700 flights on my Cub using only HXT900 9g servos throughout. I would strongly reccomend the flap mod and using an inexpensive gyro.

Stupid question, but has anyone tryed to put a power 10 on the 25 size cub? Kinda short on cash, but still want to stay safe.

Flight Ready Summary:

The E-Flite J3 Piper was observed as repaired in the frontal wing saddle section and other minor scrapes and repairs on wing tips.

However, the J3 Piper is in very good shape and servos look new. Bud included some Piper Yellow trim sheet and with that I was able to hide many prior flight / landing issues. The windshield is still usable even though it has a missing side piece and trim Sheet was used used to secure to the FUSE and did a great job.

Over all spent was just 2 hours getting it flight ready and that's was taking my time.;)

Flew her today and on the first take-off it stalled and I struggled to keep her in one piece and finally I was able to keep her level and allowed her to settled on the grass field adjacent to the hard runway.:rolleyes:

Several factors played into this experience.

1. The freaking main landing gear had too much toe-out which is a dreaded disaster waiting to happen on any J3 Piper according to the elders in our RC Club.

2. Forgot to check the travel on Ailerons and this is why the model reacted with side-to-side wing down / wing up events as there was just too much travel.

3. Due to the Main Gear issue, as the model veered off course, I may have horsed the model UP before its time and causing a stall.

Well, the only thing that broke was the wooden Master Airscrew Propeller of which I carried a brand new spare!:D No damage to the model what-so-ever!:)

I brought it back to the RC Club table and replaced the propeller with a new MAS 11 X 6 wooden propeller and proceeded to adjust all control surfaces with reduced travel and EXPO.

On the 2nd take-off, it was still unmanageable due to the Main Gear toe-out but, I was able to keep her on the ground and applied the required power to have the wings gain lift and OFF it went into the beautiful Blue Sky. Many there really enjoyed the SLOW passes and they told me that this model really looks the part of the Full Scale with those slow passes.

At half throttle, this power system is pulling 14 AMPs max and it was an awesome site to see.:)
