Default PBS NOVA program is looking for UAV hobbyist in DC area

Hello,<o></o>

My name is Frauke Levin. I'm an associate Producer with Pangloss Films, an Emmy-nominated production company in New York City. We are currently working on a PBS NOVA program about UAV technology. Our program will focus on the technology and science behind UAVs, as well as their future development and use.<o></o>

I understand that this site is primarily directed at RC plane hobbyists but was hoping that there are some UAV/drone/FPVenthusiasts among you.

We are looking for a hobbyist in the DC areawho is willing to give us a hands-on demonstration ofhis/her UAV ideally one that can fly with a DSLR camera mounted. We are looking to film you flying your UAV in the DC area, and also to record some of the footage that the UAV is capturing.

We are aiming to film sometime the second half of next week (Weds/Thurs/or Fri). <o></o>

Likely, the filming will take about two hours.<o></o>

If you are interested, please reach out as soon as possible and I can provide more details. <o></o>

I can be contactedat[email protected]<o></o>

<o></o>

Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!<o></o>

Best,<o></o>

Frauke<o></o>

Pangloss Films, New York<o></o>

<o></o>

PS: Are there any other sites that I should post on? I assume this is the most frequented but any advice is welcome!<o></o>

Personally, I think you are asking all the wrong questions because they are based on false premises. To begin with, nobody that Iknow in this hobby of model aviation flies a UAV of any kind. We fly recreational model airplanes. Now within the scope of recreational model aviation, there is a subset of modelers that fly aircraft capable of First Person View. That is, they can carry a rather tiny video camera that can transmit the video back to the flyer. These aircraft are completely incapable of carrying a payload as significant as a DSLR, or even operate it.

Maybe, before you start your project you should do some research to understand the nature of our hobby. I suggest that you contact the Academy of Model Aeronautics. Here is a web page to get you started.

John...just about any 550 or bigger quadrcopter will carry a DSLR cam with no problem. With the advances of micro technology cameras weighing as little as 30 grams can shoot HD video and send FPV signals.

Frauke, Johnshe is correct that you should contact the AMA first. This segment of our hobby is fantastic and growing at a rate or should I say like "moore's law" .You might also want to contact Chris Anderson at [email protected] He is editor in chief of Wire Mag and cofounded 3D robotics. Good luck, do your DD and look forward to watching your story.

Larry, I understand your point about micro cameras ,and to that extent you are correct, but this is a SMALL Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera.

John, Maybe I didn't say i it correctly. Being a photographer / videogrqapher I know what a DSLR camera is and know it can be easly carried by a medium sized quadrocopter of 550mm or larger. I am also saying that because of today's micro-technology there is no need to carry a camera that large and heavy. Check out the HD quality of the light weight GoPro which can record HD and be jury rigged to transmit the signal for FPV and the Horyzon HD at 32 grams which is already set uo to recdord in HD and transmit to a FPV ground stationj.

You have successfully proven that I know very little about FPV, just like the guy who started this thread.

I don't have a clue what a recreational FPV aircraft can carry. Nor do know how they are flown. I have never seen anything that you describe at my flying field. But what I have seen was pretty, small, cheap and low quality. Likely, someone somewhere is flying what you describe but I don't think it will be what the guy who started this thread is expecting.

ROTFLMAO, did you see the price for the quadrocopter? Over $9,000. That is not a recreational model airplane, by any means.

It is to some people
I fly jets and they cost more than that
go check out bvmjets.com prices and you still have to buy the turbine on top

Beginner quads can be bought for as little as $129.00 which will carry a HD keychain cam with no problem. The sky is the limit from there. I have a Gaui 550 quad which will carry my Canon Vixia video cam with no problem but I am now using the Horyzon HD cam which only weighs 38 grams and shoots 1080 @ 30 and 60 frames per sec. This increaces my battery time, The price of a quad depends on how much automation you want. A fly yourself quad with basic control board can be had for less than $400.00. Quads are a slight bit easier to fly than helicopters and a lot more stable. Quad flyers are mostly interested in shooting aerial videos or stills.

My .25 worth

Years ago I became involved with a project that was going to air on PBS.

To make a long story short, *their* project was finally scrapped because it wasn't going to project the point of view the producers and PBS wanted to make.

They had come to a group I was affiliated with to get our take on the subject, but it repeatedly was being refined so that it suited the producer and the local PBS channels political point of view.

Best point (?) made that I have seen on this thread was to have the producers on this subject contact our national org, the AMA, and let them handle what we could unintentionally turn into a hot potato.

Actually, I think the original posting was bogus. This guy is just a troll looking for excitement. You will notice that he has never come back and commented on any of our postings, right or wrong.
