Default how to power a 5-6 lb bird..!

Hi All,
I'm mostly a rotorhead but I do like the electrics. Has anyone used the Hobby Lobby 2:1 belt drive unit on say a Sig Citabria or similar type of scaler that could weigh in at 5 - 6 lbs of so?
Though I'd like to try one if that's a good choice.
Thanks, and have a safe and Happy New Year all.
Barry

I think that 2:1 gearbox is designed for really slow flying trainer planes with high lift,so i think you would be disappointed.
If you have a mighty wallet,i would recommend a maxcim motor
for ultimate performance and run time. www.maxcim.com
If your on a budget then check out the ratby team gear selection.
I would recommend a ratby triple on 24 cells for the application.

That is of course if your talking about thye speed 700 one.

Thanks Sig,
I'll check them out. My flying is more scale like than aerobatic but plenty of "my mistake" power is always nice to have on hand..!
Man, your right, most of my wallet is in helis, but I do enjoy'em.
Later my friend.

Default I love electric but....

5 to 6 pounds becomes a heavy load to float, dont forget that it takes a bigger (heavier) motor and more power (battery cells, weight) which in turn creates a need for more thrust, which....you get the idea, If you got $150.00 to $250.00 for power source, no problem, brushless motor, brushless ESC, 14 cell 2000 mah, gearing setup, go for it! Just my opinion

Under 2lbs, cheap, fast, easy

Good opinion AirCAD.....I've been lookin around at some different birds and 2-3lbs looks right. I was going by the "box" specs on weight. I think I can bring a Citabria in at three with some mods to the airframe. Another plane looks very much like a Jodel and is a scratch built from plans deal........really sounds like a fun winter project.
Gotta watch my spending too.........a small lotto wouldn't hurt either..!
Thanks for the info.
Later,
Barry

Actually I am multitasking, designing plans, watching the Atl, GA winter storm warning, packing up plots for a customer, drinking a cold one, realizing I wont (aint) gonna make it thru the blizzard to work tomorrow, and believe it or not, cooking dinner Only thing I'm not doing tonight, is building a plane.....

Default jetti

Barry,

If you get your Citabria to 4 lbs, finished then here is a mild combo:

1) Magnetic mayham reversed ($20)
2) Great planes GD-600 gear drive at 3.25:1 ($15)
3) Great planes C-30 speed control with bec ($40)
4) 10 cell cp-2400 or 1700's ($60 to $70)
5) Prop to <30 amps.

Total about $125 to $135

You could always go with the endoplasma/4.61:1/12x8 APCe/10 cells to get 400W. Then there's always the brushless route??? It's hard to beat the: 10 cell cp's/GD-600 gear box/C-50 setup for priceerformance.

Hi Marcus,
Man, am I getting an education.....this is great. All you guys have been super. I had no idea that E Flying had come so far. I appreciate all the help. Hopefully, my "real job" will give me some time to start gathering pieces parts and get a project going by next month.
Thanks again Marcus for your advice.
Later,
Barry

Same as Mwright listed, mayhem and GD600 gearbox, but use a 10 tooth pinion,.. and a 14X10 or 15X10 APC "E" prop,.. with 10 cells of 3000 nimh. This will be a "mild floater" type power setup for the plane. Other choice would be Endoplasma,.. same gearbox and cells, with a 12X8 prop. That would up you to 400 watts input and you could do some aerobatics easily, but runtimes would suffer.

Good to see you here Gary. I hope your reputation will grow as quickly here as on the ezone.
Cheers,
Grant

P.S. One day I will just have to get an E3D!
