Default Speed 400 substitute

I have a Speed 400 with a 2.3/1 off set gearbox. It is what I got when I got my SR Cutie.
My question is, what can I use as a substitute to get a little more power. I have three 10 cell 500max packs. So I am wondering if there is a brushless motor/speed controller that I can use with this gearbox and batteries.
I have been looking at the Jeti 15/4 and the Jeti 30-3p controller. Has anyone had any experience with these?
Performance. endurance , what cell did you use?

Thanks in Advance

not sure if your batteries can handle the current of a BL set up. But if you want a really cheap power up grade, get the hobby lobby LONG BLACK CAN motor! Your batteries will work great and the motor is only $14.00! Same diameter as the 400 just a little longer. Check out the stats at HL web site.

Tom,

Some of the Mega 16/15/N series of motors sounds like they would fit the bill and they work nicely with the Jet 30-3P controller (I've got the 16/15/6 and that Jeti controller). The battery packs you've got are they 500AR cells? If so they could be good to source as much as 15A and you'd need to pick a 16/15/N and prop combination that's going to keep the amps under that figure (but give you enough thrust/pitch speed). Your best bet for a start is to go to www.motocalc.com and download the trial copy which you can use for 30 days. It'll help you out with motor selection - I don't think there's many people who've splashed the cash for a brushless without first consulting MotoCalc!

If you have a 1.5 lb plane then it kind of depends what kind of flying you are looking for (sedate, mid-range, real silly, vertical til it never comes down) but I'd aim at a setup to give you at least 75W per pound. For 1.5lb that means you need about 120W. As you have ten cells (12V) then you are looking for a prop (and possibly gearbox??) that will pull about 10A (which will work nice if you have 500ARs.

Thanks Guys,
I think I will try the long can motor first.
The thing flies OK as it is, I just thought I would like a little more power. I have just made the Aileron Wing conversion (Acropro) and it flies very well.
I will check if the long can motor shaft will fit my gearbox.

How did the long can work? I have one and people ask me if I'm running brushless. It rocks.

Running the long can on a wattage set of gears swinging a APC park flyer 10x7 prop with an 8 cell mnh 800 mha pack on a 36 span 22 ounce high wing plane. Does fly it nice.

Billy,

I have it in a SR Cutie with the Aileron wing. It is certainly an improvment on the standard speed 400 setup.
I would still like a little more grunt so I will probably get the brushless setup. Thanks for your help.

I bought one of those gold cobalt 400 motors before reading this thread- very unfortunately. My motor was dead on arrival and haven't got replacement yet. I finally decided to just buy 2 long black can super speed400 motors. The cobalt 400 motor looks pretty, but must have non existent quality control nor even a quicky final inspection. Maybe it just fell apart in shipping. Whatever, I would not recommend the cobalt 400 even if it only cost $5 since it doesnt work.

Mega 1615/4 with jeti 30 speed contorl.
apc 5x5 prop with 10 cell 1100 HE cell and 8 cell 1300 scr

I have this combo in a 36 inch wing mustang. The 8 cell gives me about 60 mph and 8 min run time(mostly full throttle). The 10 cell is around 70 mph and 6 min run.

The plane is 14 oz minus batt. about 21 to 23 oz ready to go.

I have looked at moto calc and the 8 cell combo gives about 13 amps. You could prop down and a 4.75x4.75 or a 4/75x4.2 or somthing like that to get it to 10 amps.

I just picked up the motor/controler this weekend from LHS for $140. Cant beat that with a stick! LOL

I have looked at gearboxs but all the high power combos i look at are in the 16 to 20 amp range. BTW it will pull 30oz thrust with a 3 to 1 box with a 12x6 on 8 cells at 18 amps ! As far as moto calc says.

Hope this helps
