GWS ICS-480LI burned up on the ground

Last weekend at the field I was about to fly my updated Hobbico Superstar EP its maiden flight, but before I could do so the ESC fried for no apparent reason.

My setup is the brushed stock motor, GWS ICS-480LI ESC, and Floureon Lipo 11.1v (3 cells). Testing at home was perfect, but at the field, while doing a preflight check, the plane suddenly went to full prop speed on its own (with no inputs from controller!) for a few seconds and then died. I found the ESC completely fried inside the plane, its heatshrink melted, and the negative wire fell off (solder melted?).

Aside for the scary moment of a rouge airplane with full prop speed not responding to the controller, the whole thing was a big disappointment as we were expecting the maiden flight.

Any ideas? This ESC is rated 2/3 cell lipo, so what could have been the problem?

I would post pics but it won’t allow me... can anyone share their thoughts? What would be a more modern esc that would work with my setup?

I have had new in package ESC let the smoke out on the first plug in. It may have over heated on the test at home, then let go at the field. Could always get a brushles motor and ESC now.

Buzz.
