Battery question
Can I hopup a 7 cell, 8.4v battery pack to a 8 cell, 9.6v? Or downgrade to a 6 cell, 7.2v battery pack without effecting the planes electrical functions very much either way? My current plane is a 8.4v. Would it make much difference in weight to go with a 6 cell or give more power if I got to a 8 cell? Thanks for your help.

RE: Battery question
Are you taking about changing the pack itself? You could take a 7 cell pack and snip one cell out of it and re-solder the connector back on without a problem, but if you add a new cell to your existing pack, you would be asking for trouble. Otherwise you are just changing what pack you use, you are just talking weight/voltage. There are so many combinations that could happen with this, its hard to give you any concrete advice. First your motor is limited by how many volt or amps it can handle. What motor or gear box are you using? Next is what packs are you thinking of? If you try to draw more amps than the pack is capable of, it will start shedding volts. You can also change your prop/gearbox combination to effect how many amps you draw depending on the pack you want to try. And, just to confuse you a little bit more, do you want a slow flyer with lots of thrust or a fast plane the doesn't have a ton of vertical. (I know you want both right ;))

RE: Battery question
Dana,
Can you provide more specific information as to why you asked this question? Often, you can change battery technology (NiCd to NiMH to LiPo) to gain an advantage in weight loss or duration. |
RE: Battery question
I just wanted to know which battery would maximize performace and reduce weight? Which has the best power/weigh/duration ratio? Thanks.

RE: Battery question
Well, I can generalize for you. The 6 cell pack will have the least power, but will be the lightest. The 8 cell pack will put out the most power, but wieghs the most. For the most part, you will not see much duration difference between any of the packs.
