Multiple Brushless Motors, one Controller
I want to build a 4-motor electric airplane. I have contacted two suppliers who both tell me that I must use one controller for each motor. Since the controllers I would use are sensorless, it is my understanding that all they are doing is generating a rotating electrical field, and I find it difficult to why that field cannot run more than one motor, or, in this case, 4 motors.
The cost of the motors isn't too bad, but adding 4 controllers really gets the price up there.[img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif[/img] |

From what little I know of electric motors (which is primarily what I have read) it seems that "sensorless" is a misnomer. The early brushless motors used what was called "Hall sensors" to tell the controller what the rotor position was. Newer motors do not need these type sensors, but the controller still "senses" where the rotor is by the current flow. Hence, with multiple motors you would have confused input to the controller.

Yes you will have to run multiple controllers, mayby you can get a package deal and save some $
