E-starter CG
 

I got an E-starter ready to maiden once all this white stuff finally melts[&:]. I was wondering about the CG, i got it balanced on the factory marks and would like to know what others have experienced as far as the CG goes. Seems some people think the factory marks are still a little tail heavy and have control problems[:@].

I had one of those before. And only god knows the trouble I had trying to get the CG balanced. The E-Starter is a nice looking plane but I'll never get another one. One main thing is you can't move the battery around without doing some cutting in the fuslage and using an extension for the battery wire. But if you want it to fly you must use all Micro Servos. Even for the Ailerons. It will still be tail heavy, but will fly. The only way to get the plane to balance perfectly is to put the battery behind the motor. But it's hard to get it to get it to stay.

I never noticed a problem with the CG on the factory marks. The plane balanced spot-on with no battery, and the battery is centered under the CG. I used two GWS Naro servos, and a Mini for the ailerons. Even balanced on the "tail heavy" factory CG, the plane is not twitchy on the elevator.

Many people don't like the standard GWS battery mounting system, so it's not unheard of to hog out your own battery bay. Definitely not something that would attract the attention of the GWS Battery Bay Police, that's for sure :)

I haven't finished building mine yet. However, if a plane won't balance to the correct CG and there is nothing left to move... a piece of lead has always worked well. :D They sell great little self ahhesive strips of lead at the LHS.

I have no problem getting mine to balance at the factory CG, im just not sure based on some of the things that ive heard if that is the correct CG.Some people use upto an inch forward of the factory mark.......so im not sure where to start.

Mine is really twitchy at the factory marks. I measured out and marked 25 & 30% of the chord line along the bottom of wing. I found that with the model balanced at factory was extremely tail heavy. Mine flies really well at 25% with the nose down 3/8".
The center of gravity has to be placed under the thickest part of the wing. The factory marks are nowhere near there on any of my E-Starter wings. I read an excellent article on this in Backyard Flyer. Hope this helps.
