RE: do DARE models fly with what they recomend

I've built the Madamoiselle (monoplane version) and flown it for well over 100 hours in the air. Should fly even better with four wings! Please answer some questions first:
1. Motor and gearbox ratio (GWS IPS?, What letter is on front of spur gear, "A"?)
2. Prop type
3. battery- cell type, size and quantity
4. Speed control
5. Total all-up weight
Of course the first question always is "Is the type on the prop facing forwards"

I have the C gear box on it. i am using a 7.4 1200mah li-po. a 1047 gws prop, and a 2 amp esc. and is around 6.9 oz.

IPS C? That's your problem. Popular IPS-driven models like the Tiger Moth use the "A" gearing, which spins the prop a whole bunch faster.

You need a much larger, and/or steeper pitched prop, or an EDF motor to run that gear ratio.

Sounds like Matt nailed it. My Madamoiselle runs on two cells with the C gear (5.86:1) and a 1047 prop. Performance is really good, although top speed is in the 6mph range. Here is the motor/gearbox: http://www.aeromicro.com/Catalog/gws...cs__803650.htm it goes for $17.45. If you don't change the gear ratio, then you need either a motor with a hotter wind (like the GWS EDF50 motor), which would give you more rps/volt, another battery cell-which would give you more rpm, or a prop with more pitch (I would guess a 1080, 1180 or 1260). I belive the A gearing is what Pat Tritle recommended in the instructions.

pat recomended an 8.6:1 ratio! but that sounds like what I will try the bigger prop first then if that does not work I will go to the A size gear box thank you for your input!
