GEARBOX ratio question!
Would the following statement be correct ... or is it the opposite way around? :-)
The HIGHER the gear numbers (or gear ratio?) … the more thrust and amp draw. For example: A 5:33 gear ratio will deliver more thrust and draw more amps than a 4:43. All other factors being equal (prop and batteries) of course. Colin. |
RE: GEARBOX ratio question!
I believe the 4.43 would deliver more thrust and draw more amps because the rpm would be greater.

RE: GEARBOX ratio question!
For what it's worth, I did a quick motocalc thing and it showed that a 4.4 gearbox would have more thrust and amps than a 5.3. GWS 400 motor swinging a 12 x 6 prop on 7.2V.

RE: GEARBOX ratio question!
All things being equal (battery, prop, motor) a higher gear ratio will provide more thrust and draw lower current.
The effect on the flying characteristics depends on the plane. For example do not expect that more thrust will always make your plane fly faster or better. This depends on many other things. If you need more details, please provide details about what plane you are talking about and what do you want to improve by doing the gear change. And note that we talk here about static thrust.
