How Much Exponential?

The manual for my new Hitec Flash 5 suggests that most pilots use expo but doesn't give any recommendations. My Mini Super Sportster is very touchy without it (in the ailerons). At -10%, I couldn't tell the difference. -25% seemed better and -35% seemed like a bit too much. I know it's a personal thing but is there any general rule of thumb?

You're right, it is a personal thing; if 20-30%doesn't do it, consider reducing the throw on your ailerons. You should be shooting for balanced controls, where aileron, elevator, and rudder all need similar amounts of stick movement for typical flying....Jim

I and a number of better flyers I know use 80% or even 100% exponential in channels 1,2, and 4. Some of my planes have slightly different rates by they are all on the high end.

I have an Optic 6 and use 50% expo on both low rates and high rates and its my personal preference because I am comfortable with it and use to it.

I use about -30% expo as a matter of routine.

Thanks for weighing in, guys. I'm going to try ALL of your suggestions and see if I can find the "sweet" spot. This forum is invaluable...so many teachers...a real treasure chest.
Any other opinions?

RE: How Much Exponential?

Yeah, I don't use expo at all! I tried it but found that it fools me into overcontrolling. I would move the stick a little, the plane would barely respond, so I would move the stick a little more and the plane would still not respond the way I want, so I would move the stick some more -- and of-course then it would respond way too much. Yes, I know it is just a matter of getting used to it -- but I do fine with my programmable dual rates, so...
