How do I use and setup speed controller?
First electric. I traded for a large electric plane, brushed motor, 24 nicad pack, speed controller. All I have to do is add my rx. Now I know how to set up a throttle servo but how do I use a speed controller?
I assume I plug it into the throttle servo input on rx but do I have to set end points or adjust anything from the radio end? Can it be reversed like a throttle servo? Anything to be careful of or watch for? Thanks, Pauul |
RE: How do I use and setup speed controller?
Paul, what kind of speed controller is it? If you bought the setup RTR then it should be good to go. Plug the ESC into the throttle channel, set your throttle endpoints to +/- 100%, and keep your throttle at idle when you plug the battery in and turn the system on. Most controllers will auto-detect your settings and give you a beep when they are ready to run (usually a second or two delay to hear the beep). You may have to reverse your throttle channel if the ESC does not activate properly, but with modern ESCs it shouldn't just fire up at full power if your throttle channel is reversed. Whenever your battery is plugged in, always treat the prop arc with respect, as if it could start running at any time.

Thanks, now will I be safe if I hook up the battery with the radio off?

If your ESC has an on/off switch, then theoretically yes. However I always have my radio on when plugging in the flight battery. If your ESC does not have an on/off switch, then the model will be on as soon as you plug the battery in. This is assuming you have a speed control with BEC (no receiver battery).
