recommend a speed controller
 

For the SpitFire EP from World Models.

I will be using a Futaba radio. According to the instructions I need a 15A, that will support up to 8 cell nicd or nimh.

I see there is a difference between brushed and brushless speed controllers. I think I need a brushless controller for this plan.

What do I need to get?

Yes, you need to get a speed controller for the motor you want to use. Brushless motors work by the esc changing the polarity in the motor. Brushed motors work because the motor itself changes the polarity, not the esc. If you are wanting a brushless motor, I really like the AXI series with a Jeti speed controller. I'm not very good at chosing a motor for a specific plane, so someone else will have to help you with that.

But, if your plane came with a motor and you don't know what type it is, look at the amount of wires coming from the motor. If it has two, then it is brushed. If it has three, then it is a brushless.


EDIT: I just found your plane and it has a brushless motor. The Jeti Advance 18 plus would work. I use that one and love it. Someone else may ahve a better suggestion though.

jeti is good too, the other favorite for many ppl is castle creations phoenix 25 although i run a phoenix 45 in all my planes. that way if you ever get a bigger plane you can still use the 45 amp controller without buying a new one. even the phoenix 45 weighs in at less than an ouce, so weight is not a problem. if you run a controller that handles more amps than you need it will never get hot or get overworked since you are not even coming close to its 45 amp maxium. also it will have less resistance as the current passes through, so you will get a slightly longer run time as well. with the phoenix controllers you can set the cutoff voltage at any amount you want, personally i run a 3 cell lipo and i set it to cutoff at 9.5 volts so i dont fully discharge the lipo during a flight, but you can set the cutoff to any voltage that you like. even if you choose to get another brand brushless controller think about upgrading to one that handles more amps than you need now so your set for the future too.

Jeti or Castle Creations. You can't go wrong with either. Buy the one rated for at least 15 Amps, and you'll be golden.
