Where to fly?
 

Ok well I've been wanting to buy a plane for a while now, and now that I'm close to actually buying one I have to ask if you guys think my flying spot is okay. I want to get the Goldberg Mirage which has a 54" span and weighs about 4 lbs when flight ready, do you guys think it is okay to fly this plane in a park area with people around? I think the first few times I fly I will go to a deserted field so that there is no risk in hitting anybody as I'm learning. I mean there won't be very many people around (I'm not going to fly when any games are in progress!) I think it is relatively safe since I will be flying up high way above everybody and then I just need to find a safe spot to land and takeoff. Please share any thoughts! Thanks guys!

I'm afraid that a 4 lb airplane cannot be described as a parkflyer. Being as your a newbie, I won't go into preaching, but a plane of that weight can do some serious damage....If you have an abandoned field that you can fly in, why bother and take chances with the park. I ply parkflyers exclusively and don't fly in parks. I would never consider flying anything larger that a Mini Ultra Stik, or a foam J-3 Cub in a park, and that would be a 6:30 AM when most are asleep and a children are home watching cartoons. I suggest that you also contact your insurance agent about this. Most home owners insurance policies will cover liability on what would be considered a toy. I don't think yours would qualify, and therefore you should think about Joining the AMA, if for nothing else, to get their liability insurance....JMHO...Pat

I agree, that is a HUGE plane to be flying at a park. Unless you are going at sunrise and are outta there before anyone is around. I have a 38" wingspan foamy plane that weighs about 2lbs, and I would never fly it at a busy park. I go early in the morning and leave before anyone ever gets there.

Joining the AMA is alwasy a good idea but be aware that their insruance only ciovers you at a recognized (club) AMA field

uhh crap that sucks cause I live in a suburban place so there aren't any just free fields to fly on. maybe I won't get a plane, as they are quite expensive and 2/3 cars need some parts. Thanks for your help

The AMA insurance will cover you as long as you are flying in a safe manner. It does not necessarily have to be in a club envinroment.

Hey,

My neighbor has a goldberg mirage and he flys it in a small park with ease. Go to desert and see how it flys first though.
