subsitute battery?
 

Hi am about to buy a battery for the plane I'm getting. Under the requirements it says to buy this battery: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXBES8&P=7

Could I subsitute the reccomended battery with this one?: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXKZC2&P=7
or this one: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXGBM8&P=7

It would be ideal to use either the second or third linked battery since they both use deans, are cheaper, are lighter, and have almost equal capacity. I know the 2 subsitute battery packs are 4/5SC size but I don't think this would be an issue.

Also the battery won't be taking more than 30amps continus.

I don't see why that would be a problem. The first is a NiCd and the other two are NiMh's, I have used both in my R/C Truck without any problems. The only thing I don't see is the C rating of the cells, to make sure they can handle a 30amp continuous draw. Otherwise you should be good with either.

okay cool, I think either would be fine as well. 30 amps really isn't that much so the batteries should be able to handle it without a problem.

A lot of batteries are only rated at 10C, which on a 2000mah batery is only 20amps. The more high-power, so to speak, stuff is rated at 15 or 20C.

so would you reccomend going with the $25 battery in hope that it will handle more current?

Those two batteries are most likely the same C rating. They seem to be spec'd the same as far as the cells are concerend, the one is more expensive because it has more capacity, that is probably all that is different. 1800mah on the first one vs. 2000mah on the second one. I tried looking at the Electrifly web page to find the C ratings for those packs, and they do not show anything. It does say to charge at 250ma, which is a very low charge rate, so I wonder if the cells are rated lower than expected, or if they just play it very safe with the charge rates?

I had a problem with a brand new Trinity 3100 mah, NIMH pack not charging up completly at .5 C.
Trinity said recharge again at about 1.5 to 2 C. Bingo. Full charge. No overheat or problems. I now charge at 1.5 C.
