New motor rumour

Got a half comprehendable call this afternoon as to an offer and need some full-blown information or best guesses.

Apparently a fellow in Seattle area is bringing in a boatload of core-less motors with controllers. They are being advertised as a cheap Astro-flite 020. Supposed to be efficient, lightweight and around $50 retail. That is about the extent of what I have been told, otherwise than it was to have been shown off at the Tacoma show, but did not arrive in time.

You readers have any idea as to what is being described or inferred here?

Was it Todd Long at Todds Models or Saturn Hobbies in Auburn, other than that I'm not sure of what you are talking about.

i don't think so

Nope, this guy supposedly works out of his garage. Is more into electronic knick-knacks than modeling. And, he is not a kit pusher.

Boy, I wish that I would have paid more attention the other day.

What ever he has at 50 bucks won't last long.

I second Hitec Rednecks suggestion of $50 being too cheap. I'm all about a good deal, but not too god of deal. Remember buy cheap, buy twice.

More Info

Got a e:mail message from the electronic genius in Seattle. Had been trying to get ahold of him for weeks.

Seems he forgot to add in some import duty, and a number of other things. The "good-guy" price is about $70 per motor/gearbox, and maybe $90 retail. He also thought the standard brush type ESC would work, and all it does is make the motors sit there and humm.

Now everything is being revised, and it may come out within 10 cents of any other one out there.

Sorry for the trouble guys. But I thought it too good of a deal to be true.

Could it be mega motors. They have a new 400 size motor coming out in several weeks. The ACn16**** will fit in most 400 size selections. Up to 30 amps!

Hmm

Hmm, first of all, brushed ESC's will NOT work with brushless, so that rumor is out. Second, maybe you're thinking of MEC. Pete, owner of MEC is "supposedly" ditching his brushed motors to deal brushless motors exclusively. He was even selling his Turbo 10 Plus brushed motors for $30 at Northwest Model Expo. A secret source has told me that he has struck a deal with Mega motors, which is being distributed by Ken Mizell(sp?) and will have MEC label and will be sold by Pete. MEC has done the same with Maxcim 13Y and 13D brushless motors, but since Maxcim raised their price by $80 last year, he hasn't been happy with the sales. I've been told that MEC's brushless motors will be priced very well and those motors are great. They are "similar" to Jeti brushless motors, but are built to handle more RPM and can be used with ducted fans and gearboxes with ease. All this business details are taking place as we speak and now you know. I'm not aware of any other guy planning on selling stuff that lives out here. I get most of the "gossips" first hand.

Would you buy motors from someone who apparently thinks coreless and brushless are the same thing and that brushless motors will work with standard controllers ? Not me. I'll stick to dealing with people who have some idea what they're talking about.
