Default Rudder on IFO

I just got a IFO and put two flights on it. It was a blast but the lack of rudder drove me nuts... back to the building room I went.

I modified my IFO such that it has a full flying rudder controlled by a third servo. It seems to work well and is quite durable. Makes TR possible, better tracking on vert lines, loops, and some interesting spins.

Basically, I took the stock rudder and put a vertical CF rod on it with about 1/3 of the area ahead of the rod. This rod became the pivot/hinge of the surface. I then glued some large nylon tube about 1" long (extra from kit) vertically where the fuse mast meets the trailing edge of the wing. The vert CF rod on the rudder slides into this tube and is kept captive by a extra servo horn that is glued to the CF rod which also acts as the control horn for the rudder. I moved the RX forward a little and put the rudder servo just behind the RX to avoid moving the CG too much. I figure the entire weight penalty is one servo and about 6" of CF rod and a little glue. I can get almost 45 degrees of throw before I start to interfere with the elevons.

Sorry I don't have pics. Might try to post some later if anyone is interested.

Default IFO

rcairmike: It is the MK3, my guess is the mini won't like the extra weight, but don't know... don't have one.

johnny9390: Using a 3 cell Lithium Ion pack from WildRC. I get about 20 minutes of air time and I have better than 1:1 for about 1/2 the filght.

To all: Have photos developed. Will scan in tonight and post if I have time.

I really like the idea of those lithium packs but they are SOOOO expensinve, especially if you gotta buy the charger and power supply.

Johnny: Yes, the Li-Ion packs are really light... you can really feel the weight savings... especially in the pocket book. Reguardless of the cost, I really like the packs... light and long run times.

Pics of rudder follow.
