critterhunter, I'm using a new tx for a dedicated charge station. My battery usage dropped tremendously. I get between 12-14 carges per set of batteries. And then you can recycle the batteries into your controllers. I also found no difference between costco batteries and duracells. As soon as I find A source for cheap energizers( yeah right) I'll test them. Has anyone tried dielectric grease on the plug? I keep meaning to buy some, since it appears I lost my lifetime supply during a recent move, that should help establsh a circiut and start the charging process. It appears that the wind has cut out, Indicating the need for more test flights. Tim

The motors used in the AH's EZ Chargers work great with the
stock AA's props.
First unsolder the connections and then look for 2 small holes
in the cowl. Insert a tiny screw driver in the holes to locate the
motor mount screws and the motor comes right out.
After carefully reaming out the prop hole by hand with a drill
bit I pressed it right on.
The gear was the hardest to remove- eventually cutting it off
with an x-acto.
After hooking it up to 3 volts of AA batteries she screamed to life.
About twice the power with the same prop.

Morning all, just went to the tru/amazon site. AA's are not listed at all now. Previously they had been "currently unavailable". Don't know if that is a good sign or not. Tim

Thanks for the info guys. I'm using Energizer 2500ma nimhs ($15 at Walmart) to power my TX so I don't have to keep buying batteries. These things are the best thing since sliced bread...or the AA. However, I'd still prefer to run one TX as a charger only via a seperate power source. That way the charges don't get longer as the batteries get weaker in the TX. Thanks again for the info and link and I'll read up on it.

I didn't know anything about these until I bought one last night at Target (with the EZ-charger). It flew great (the EZ Charger is now in a tree waiting for a strong wind) so I bought 2 more today. One for me, one for my son so we can dog fight and one to experiment on. My 11 y.o. son flew it well on his first attempt and he's never flown an rc place before.
Anyway, I've skimmed over the 52 pages here but will have to go back over them.

Has anyone put this power system on a cheap rubber band airplane like [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXK550&P=M]THIS[/link]?

There's quite a bit on these 52 pages. It's a great forum for the AA's.

With the Defender they give you an extra set of props. Bless them!
So I filled in the gapping hole with plastic from an old model kit and
drilled out a tiny hole for it to fit the EZ Charger motor shaft.
The hardest part was getting the hole perfectly centered.
The plastic insert was glued with CA and then cut flush. The EZ Charger
motor swings the prop just as well as the original Defender motor did.
The only difference I see between the two motors is that the Defender
has a transistor across it.

The second motor in the pic is the original AA prop on the EZ Charger
motor I did last night.
Now to put the Defenders on my SS/AA.

GTX, if you're looking for some balsa to fly you might want to try building
the Guillows Cloud Buster kit #4301 or the Fly Boy kit #4401.
Although you might want to try a carbon fiber rod for the Fly Boy's fuselage.
The Cloud Buster would handle the wind better since it has a 17" wingspan
but you might have to build a box for the battery & RX.
I know some people say the Guillows kits use too heavy a balsa but I've
had no problem getting their kits to fly. If you have to, pick up some lighter
balsa from a hobby shop because Guillows' plans are usually solid.

Thanks for the tip on the models. I may try one.
Those motors look like N20's, the same as those used on most micro helicopters like the Blade CP and DF4.

The first AA I bought flies great, but you have to be easy on the throttle or it porpoises. I've played with the elevator to calm it down some. As the battery runs down after 3 or 4 minutes, it gets easier to fly. The 2nd one is easier to fly and is smoother. No porpoising. I haven't tried the 3rd one yet. My son and I had a blast flying them together tonight for a while.

OK, this is really bugging me. What are the "3 aluminum stickers" for?

They are for the tail and rudder. They help to make them stay in position if you have to trim a little. You place then across the bends (creases).

So far not so good putting the larger motors on my SS/AA.
The motors might be too heavy so I'm making a tear down
to bring the wing forward. This plane has a wingspan of 16"
but only a wing area of 38".
The plane that flew so great has an 18" wingspan but a
51" wing area. Big difference!
The stock AA if you modified a mono with an extra 8" would
give you a 16" wingspan with a wing area of roughly 40".
That's probably not enough.
The plane would be faster but landings would be plowing ground.
The only thing I can think of is add more foam or build up a wing
to at least a 50" wing area.

The SS/AA is now chopped history. I've added this extended Arrow
wing and the larger motors with the Defender's props and tests so far
have been good. Wingspan is 24" and the wing area is 50" so it should
be a good match. The larger motors should be heavy enough to shead
some wind and make for some nice glide ins.

Changed the tail section for more stability and added 2 grams to the nose.
I'm getting there. She now weighs 28 grams and the larger motors pull it
with no problem. I'm sure you could have a plane at 35 grams or more.

Wings can be changed in about 5 minutes. This one has foam wing tips
and a width of 3 inches.

I was just at the Second Anual Big Birds Air show in Holland Michigan and met up with Fred Matthis, a local that sells small rubber powerd airplane kits.

He showed me a couple of his kits that he converted to R/C using the Aero Ace electronics, so I just had to buy one (a moral imperitive.)

Looking through the kit I was impressed with the detail from a home run buisness. His kit includes detailed instructions and full color photos on removing the electronics from an Aero Ace and installing it on his planes.

Check out his web site www.fly-m.com to see an example of his work.

Fred told me he has been trying to contact aeroacemods.com but they have been playing phone tag for the past 2 weeks. Hopefully you'll be seeing his planes there soon.

Maybe when I retire, like Fred, I'll start a small business too.

I swear I have seen the A-10 Kathy'r Worthog in my local hobby store, but not as an AA mod. Maybe my local store must get some kits from Fred.

So, how does it fly?

Who is LHS? More retailers would be awesome. It could increase demand and cause spinmaster to bring in more models.
no posts this week due to heavy winds.
The wind has died and I have noticed something new on my blue plane. I still believe that this plane has been updated, that said, the paint and now foam is being pulled from the lower wing 3/8" in front of the props. Why? I checked my yellow bipe and it has similar scarring, but much less severe. The motors seem to spin faster on the blue one, but I can't say that for a fact. It does glide, and that is different from all of my previous bipes. the glide ratio is similar to a mono mod. Tim

IF ya all are interested in a new jet vidio follow the following sequence: Go to rcgroups.com then to their "aircraft electric" and to "Indoor and Micro Models" go to that threads page 2 to "The Aa Jet has arrived" and to that threads page 7 to Tommyr and click on the link. Your see a good (if optimistic - in my experience with the new jet) demo of it flying. The vid is 8.6 mgs so unless you have hispeed prepare to wait. Good looking all!!

Hi all, There is a post a few pages back about not flying out the battery, that when the planes starts getting sloppy and can't climb to go charge it. The writer sounded like he knew what he was talking about. I have also read posts that explain the reason for not modding your controller to an a/c adapter, the batteries are used as limiters to what the charger will put out.
Here is my response, unless you have modded out your tx, fly the batteries out. Then turn the plane off/on and burn the battery again, and then do it once more. Do this once you notice that your plane is not performing as well as in the past. Seems to last me about ten charges. It is not exciting to fly at 3 feet and slow at full throttle, but you will be happy later.
Also, an earlier post mentioned using teflon-based oil to re-lube the bearings I have found that this is true. Some on a q-tip and spin the motor.
monster, where would I look for your tank?

If you run a LiPo cell much below 3 volts, it may never charge again. It will certainly shorten it's life span.
