Default Cheap/Fun conversions you might want to try(that work too!)

Been a lot of interest in rubber/electric foam free flight conversions in some of the other discussion groups. Thought there might be some interest here. Biggest hit's been Funcrafts Acro Bipe, 15 inch span powered with GWS direct (fast and fully aerobatic) or an N20 geared (slowflyer). Hobbico also makes a line of warbirds 18.5 to 20 inch span that are just dying for radio gear.

Default Cheap/Fun conversions you might want to try(that work too!)

I just bough an old Guillows(sp?) kit of a Stuka.

it was made in 1969 and was designed for rubber, free flight gas, C/L gas, or "simple" RC (ie. one channel system)

I bought it to learn how to build and am converting it to RC.

the only problems I am having is how to build the ailerons and for some reason one wing came out heavier than the other (not covered yet)

I'll post pics of the kit/box etc if there is intrest in it...

BTW the wingspan is about 34"

34 inch is S400 territory, should fly well enough on 7 600AE's

well im still debating on gas or electric.... im thinking a little .09 or .10 engine would pull it nice.... but ive been thinking that electric would be fun so I can use it at the parks around me...

First I got to get it ready for controls.

I still havent got pics as I had to work late and couldnt get to the shop to work on it till real late... and by then I didnt feel like messing with it (needed sleep bad)

Im building the 600series of guillows free
flights.. there are the 20-24 inch wing
span .. Im making foam ribs (tossing the
balsa ones) that give it 50% more chord..
.. should be perfect for Electric conversion..
.. there are really a treat to build.. and
the kits are 8$ comes complete with landing
gear .. toss the tissue and put on some lite
film.. I cant wait to start shopping for a
powerplant and a micro rec and servos!

Default Top This!!

Hey guys,
I'm about to start on the ultimate conversion. I bought a guillows B-17 off ebay. It's designed for u-control with two 049s. I want to make it four channe;. gas or electric. I'm not sure. Do you guys have any suggestions? It's a 45" wingspan.

Mikerjf wrote "34 inch is S400 territory". I am new to the E-power world, but I would like to point out that size isn't the only factor. I feel that wing loading is more important then wing span, to determine what size motor is needed. I once built a quarter scale model of an ultralite that flew on an Enya .15.

My current project is a 36" version of the same plane. On its "taxi test" it lifted off, with authority, with only an IPS for power.

I know (having built a few) that the Guillows kits are heavy (for a rubber band kit), but you might be able to get by with a smaller (lighter) power plat.

As to the one wing being heavier, welcome to the wonderful world of Guillows! I don't know many serious rubber-band builders that would even consider building one (talking about the scale planes) without changing out the wood. They are hard to build straight, balance and are heavy...

Personally, I would rather take the same money to the LHS, buy some balsa and throw together a profile plane. Much easier to build and set up, and in the hands of the average builder easier to fly.

But, that is just my two cents... and worth every penny.

Default Rubber Kit Conversions

The GWS 100C ( 2.8:1) geardrive with a 9X7 prop and 8 300mah NiMh cells would probably work for lightly built Guillows 30-36"w/s kits. The GWS 300C is same size and weight and with a 9X7 prop and 8 720mah NiMh cell pack would really add thrust but with more weight/faster flying speed and tougher on landing gear etc,
8 cells is tougher on motors but can make the difference in flying or not. Throttle back a little after initial climb.

You may want to add a little dihedral, plus down and right thrust to the low wingers. There is an article on E-Zone that I wrote with recommendations on rubber kit conversions . It's in the E-Zone News and Annoouncements section, click on "last 30 days" to get to it.

Default Hobbico Fly-Zone conversion

For Christmas my son gave me a Hobbico Fly-Zone ME-109 free flight plane. I don't like free flight stuff. What kind of fun is when you throw this stuff and watch it crashed? I want to crush it myself .
So I put in a micro radio I had: GWS PICO receiver, 2xHS55 (aileron and elevator) and 4x110mAh NiMh. I have left original motor and battery.
It was to heavy and way underpowered. So I cut out the original battery and motor and replaced it with Cox 0.020.
Now this thing fly like a racing plane (scale ). Unlimited vertical, rolls, loops low passes, whatever you want.
The only problem I found was not enough time to enjoy it. Original Cox fuel tank is about 1 cc and can last for about 2 minutes - not to much when it takes about 30 seconds to hand launch it.
Later on I have added external fuel tank (8cc made of CA glue applicator bulb). I could fly up to 10 minutes. To shut down the engine I just climb high and then dive to cut of the fuel.
Here are some pictures of the plane before the fuel tank conversion.

Hey, Mike! That's the very plane that started it all, for me!

As a free flight, it hit both wings in the crutch of a tree on its first or second flight, and the nose kept right on going, but I was hooked from that moment.

I thought it would make a great RC conversion, too (I since repaired it as a free-flight, and you're right, it does fly great), but I've heard some people say that it's just not economical or easy to convert free-flights to RC power. I'm glad to hear you succeeded, though.

I'm going to have to try that...

Dan.

funcraft has a bunch of other stuff that works well also. i'm in the process of putting a Selman setup in the Eagle, and it's doing good. lots of space inside the fuse there.

The FC Eagle flies pertty well with micro gear, but its foam is rather brittle. Other FC planes that convert well are their P-51 and Spitfire models, and they look hot!

Do you guys think i could put an AP .061 into an electric Global Extra 300L? Would the engine need to be bigger or smaller?
I posted this question in the ARF/RTF forum but no one answered... Here's the link to it: http://www.rcuniverse.com/showthread...397&forumid=57]

For those this side of the pond I think the Hobbico planes are availble under the name 'Lee'.

In the UK at least they are distributed by the major RC wholesaler so should be available from most shops.

I got this Spit a while back £15.99. Still haven't done anything with it yet. An RFFS would be nice.

Default Cheap/Fun conversions you might want to try(that work too!)

Wildpalms,

I have converted the P-51D from lee converted to electric flight. I used this equipment (after removing the stock battery, circuit and motor):

- Motor: GWS DD (the one that comes with EDF-50)
- Propeller: Stock (with adapter)
- Servos: 2 x 4.5 gram
- Receiver: ACT ~5 grams
- Battery: lipo E-Tech 250 (will try E-Tech 600 soon)

I have set it up for RET. Kept the stock dehidral. It flies great. Not too fast and it can fly really slow!

Regards,

Jan-Dirk

I ran a Cox .020 on this Hobbico Flyzone Zero with a 555 + HS55s. I didn't reinforce the wing and while pulling out of a fast loop it dutch rolled into the ground. Hey, I got 4 flights out of it! I just finished the rebuild, this time slightly heavier @ 5oz with an IPS motor DD + 6x110 nimhs. It just needs stiffer wings.

Does anybody have any advice on adding spars to these things?

ORIGINAL:

Here is what I did to my Flyzone ME-109:
1. Brush a very thin layer of 20min finish epoxy on both spars
2. On both sides of the spar (top and bottom) glue a carbon fiber ribbon (wing is sandwiched between CF).
3. Use Gorilla Glue (the stuff, that makes foam) to glue both wings to belly pan. Don't use supplied sticky tape.

This wing is so stiff, that doesn't flex at all. I mean it. Nothing.

These small planes are excellent fliers. Very fast (for it's size) and very stable. The next one will be Spitfire
