Brushless to replace a 280 or 300?
 

I've got this split 280 that I still haven't decided to throw in the trash or upgrade the motor to something usable yet.

I don't know anything about brushless set-ups other than they're more energy efficient than brush-type motors, and I think I believe all of them need an additional controller. (Is this in addition to a speed control w/BEC? -- not sure)

So, assuming I take the plunge, any recommendations on brand, size, models, etc, as well as power source (currently I use a 6-cell 720mAh AAA NiMh pack)

There are many diffrent brushless motors, but most people find Hacker to be the best.

the split is/should be a fast plane...


I used a Hacker B20 12L 4:1 with a APC S 9x6 prop in many speed 280/300 applications with amazing results!

430g thrust, flight times of approx 7min useing 8x720Nimh

the B20 12L can be sued on 6-10cells, and would fit your Split 280... and also it fits Mini Laser 3D, MPX Stuntman, MadMax, and may more... even the big Su31 3D! where we get up to 1kg of thrust! pretty good for a 73g motor ;)

I recomend useing Hacker/Master 30A ESC.

I will second the Hacker brushless. I have a B50 and a B20. They are both excellent motors. You do need a different speed controller for the brushless motor. Hacker makes their own, Jeti makes a bunch of different ones and Castle Creation also has a nice line up of controllers.

The older version controller has a separate sensor cable (typically five wires) but the newer version of controllers are sensorless. Also the controllers have all kinds of programs that you can setup. Pretty cool stuff.

just make sure to use Hacker ESC with Hacker motor to get the correct timing :)

there are others that work too.... but Hacker ESC are good.

Hi,

For a much cheaper alternative to Hacker have a look at the Mega 16/15/x series. I'd guess that a /6 or a /7 flown without a gearbox would really liven up your plane! Other alternatives are the Astro 010 (but you need more than 7/8 cells usually) or how about the Model Motors Mini AC range? Then just befoer Christmas the MP Jet brushless+gearbox appeared and they'r just FIFTY (yes, fifty!!) dollars for the motor and the gearbox together.

The Mega and MJ jet motors are good. but the Mega won´t fit in a Split 280...

the AC extreme has lousy efficenty. 20% less than Hacker B20L 4:1.

the small DD AC motors might be good too, but in sweden they cost almost as much as a Hacker!

I´ll let you know about the MJ jet motor as soon as I tested it :)
