Default BJ Craft Passion build/ New guy

Hey guys,
I've been lurking in here for a while. I'm new to F3A but have been in the hobby for 12 years.

Bought a BJ Passion from F3AU (Thanks Mike!).
I'm really happy with the kit. Impressive glass work and fantastic covering.

It took me a while to decide which airframe to purchase. Was set on a Spark for a bit then the Essence but ultimately chose the Passion, mainly because ive never owned a biplane.

I fear I jumped the gun on my motor choice. I bought a Q80 and quickly realized that it may be too big in diameter to fit in the nose of the Passion.
So my question is. Do I hack the glass from under the front hatch to accommodate the motor? Or just buy a C54 and gearbox?

Hi Jonathan,

It might pay to post some pictures of what you intend to modify to fit the Q80 in...

Cheers,
Jason.

There are a few pictures of Q80 Passion biplanes on the web; one was sold here in the RCU Classifieds in your same color (yellow).
They all have the hatch/fuselage cut to help fit the motor...which also leads to having to relocate one of the hatch pins/holes.

Here is a picture of the one that sold here

Have you seen this thread on the plane?
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/elec...t-passion.html

It would be very straightforward to drop in a Plettenburg or a Himaxx outrunner; both of those are available from Mike at F3A.

Hi Jonathon
I just flew my Yellow Passion tonight. Wow I really like it.
I'm running a Himax 6330Pro. Gobs of power. Dave snow did a really good job mounting it and has a special laser cut kit for installing it.
Glad you like the plane. It's a very strong performer.

Ok Im making some progress. Mounted the rudder servo tray and RX plate. Im going to use a Gator battery tray so I have more CG movement with the batts. Uses the stock battery tray for the RX mount.

Questions:
How do you guys install the wheels and pants with the standard hardware? Ive never liked using a bolt with nuts and collars on it. Does anyone make a real titanium axle that will work?

Lastly, I decided to switch to a C50 13XL. Im a little unsure of how to go about installing the firewall and the proper way to align the thrust axis.

Ralph Schweizer makes these titanium axles for F3A http://www.precisionaeroproducts.com...nium-axles-4mm

Cheers,

I normally used Secraft 16mm axle....f3a unlimited has them, along with a small piece of ply glue inside the wheel pant and 2 servo hex screws trough the gear and pants solid and light

Use a steel 8-32 nut and bolt. A very small weight penalty but it's cheap, quick and will probably outlast your plane.

I also like the NMP axles. Unlikely that you will find a lighter method but they will wear out over time being aluminum.
As far as the motor goes the thrust should be molded or sanded into the nose ring and hopefully you can just follow that. If different the manufacturer should have let you know.
This is an old thread and my first electric pattern build but it shows a hacker geared motor installation. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-p...e-build-4.html

How did your build and maiden flight go?
I should complete assembling my Passion (using OS F3A belt drive with 3 blade prop setup) this weekend and will just be waiting for weather ...
