Whooooaaaa ... plenty of room there Chris! Looks like its easy access too. I am praying hard my Fliton can be in my hands by Wed! Do put up a video of yours when she is ready. One more question ... how do you find the quality of the plane and its ease of build?

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
Quality is pretty good. There are a few things Fliton will most likely fix for the next batch I'm assuming. I sent the info to Alex, and he sent it on to Fliton. To me, they were small potatoes.. I'm very happy with how straight everything appears to be. Hopefully get to test fly it after the contest this weekend.
I'm waiting for more parts to come in still. Hopefully tomorrow so I can hook up the control linkages and install the batteries.

You actually went to all the trouble to create a new logon to RCU just to post that? Wow, what a waste of Internet bandwidth!!!

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
Ok, so I am going to get back to the build thread. Had a contest, and also lots going on. I can say that I flew it two more flights today. It is tailheavy where I am flying it. For sure. .
With my aileron servo mount fixed, the plane flew pretty darn good. I toned down the rates some (still need more, but I'll change the cg first) and flew the Masters sequence once. Almost as well as I fly it with my Abbra (and on the second flight, lol) Right rudder knife goes a little to the belly, left rudder knife goes alot to the belly. Up lines, down lines pull to the canopy. 45's off power, pull to the canopy..
Tail heavy at my cg is causing these issues for sure. I'm adjusting it and will try again. Won't be for a few days as it's supposed to be really windy here. Will give me time to edit the Kfactor and hopefully finish this build thread.
Not blowing smoke here, as there is no need cuz I'm getting nothing out of this, but I really liked the way it flew today. With some setup work, I think we may have a really good, fairly priced plane here.

Not true at all. There have been many I90's and 60's loose wings in flight (do a search on RCGroups). Before that the Jumping Jack had the same issue. When confronted with the problem, Fliton just turns it's back and pretends the issues do not exist.
Sorry if I came across so negatively, that being my first post and all, it really was not why I joined up here. It's just that my I90 DID loose a wing in flight at MWE this last May, Mark Leseberg was flying it at the time and managed to get the rest of the airframe down without damage. Upon recovery of the parts, it was obvious that the plane's wings had not been glued where they should have. I carried on communication with Edson from then till a week or so ago, he kept telling me that he was going to send me a replacement but never did, now his email address has been disconnected.
Prior to that, three years ago, I had one of their Jumping Jacks, 2nd flight, wing blows off, the plane lawndarted in from 200 feet and destroyed pretty much all of it's equipment. Fliton would'nt give me the time of day on that one.
So yes, I am feeling a little stung. I will never own another Fliton product and would advise anyone who does to check those wings closely.
Sorry for the intrusion, I'll leave now.

Chriss ... with your explanation it cannot be said that you are intruding, not at all. I did not realise there were issues as I only followed the Extra 330 Freestyle thread in RCG. I have owned the ICON, Prodigy and the Extra 330 Freefstyle and none had its wings come off. Even others who few the Edge 540 on glow did not have any wings coming off, maybe we were fortunate.
My Element arrived and I went to the hobby shop to pick her up ... all I can say is wooooooow she is long! Oh yeah ... the parts count seems to be very low or maybe the box is just big. One of my pals who is a keen F3A pilot is most interested in her. I am still thinking glow or EP ... decisions decisions decisions ...

Or, regarding most ARFs: the parts don't fit, or the construction is shaky, or the covering looks good from a distance but is crap on closer inspection..... Be a man and build your own airplane!

Pattern Man ... may I call you that? Unless its only reserved for those who only build their own planes from scraps of woods ... Anyways my Element is still sitting in the box, not unwrapped her yet but it all looks great. Did you get a manual with yours? Both the Element and the Extra 330 - 120 came without manuals but it sould not be hard to build. Especially when you already done most of the work and shown us about it. I think I will join you by going EP.

Huummmmmmm, In response to "sellaplane."
That would suggest generally that ("most") including Oxai, Extreame Composite, Composite-Arf, Goldberg, Hangar 9, JTEC, Aeroworks, QQ's aircraft Co. and all the other high quality company's providing a high quality ARF aircraft (pattern or other) are "shakey," by suggesting their parts don't fit and the finish is very poor? Wow,...that's a pretty "bold" generalized statement to make about ARF's.
I've seen kit built planes that look like they were built using a butter knife and a rasp for finish sanding and covering applied with a clothing iron, it depends on the skill level of the builder. I myself have built several 40% Cardens, scratch built a Tom Miller designed 40% Staudacher and currently own a 39% JTEC 330LX ARF and the quality is very, very good, amoung others ARFs and all the parts fit.
That's just not a very fair statement to make,....if you want to bash a particular product,...man up and spit it out,...please don't condemn"most" ARFs There will be imperfections in products from time-to-time,..dosen't make it a bad product.
This post is not intended to offend anyone, nor is it's intent meant in a disrespectful way.[8D] Everyone has the right to their oppinions,..some should be shared with disgression,...IMOP,...

No manual Tianci. Wasn't hard to figure stuff out. I think the plan is to have a downloadable manual at some point.
As for the thread, lets keep it on the Element please fellas. I don't want this to be 1000 posts of stuff that doesn't help someone build the plane. Having to search pages and pages to find what you may want. If you don't like Arf's, don't buy em. Easy as that.

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
Hooking up the control surfaces I notice the plywood plate only on one side. I decided to use the Offset Mk horns that Central sells as it was the only way to get the centerline of the horn hinge point over the center of the hinge. The plywood plates aren't long enough for these horns so I drilled a new hole.
After predrilling the holes for the screws, I put a couple of drops of thin foam safe ca in each hole. .

I Agree with that,...somethings just require a pleasant response and any further comments on the subject should be taken else where.

I setup my elevator tracking using the stick method.. Then setup my throws with a Budd Laser throw meter on my elevators and ailerons.
I started out conservative, but on the high side. I found that I had way to much throw on the first flight.

Temporary battery mount is in. This isn't the final resting place. This was just temporary. I feel as if I was a little tail heavy on the first 3 flights.

RE: Fliton Element 170 ARF build
Cooling ducts were installed using 3mm depron foam. I should have done this prior to the first flight. Instead I decided I would send my Hacker in for $200 worth of repairs from overheating it. LOL I should get it back today I'm hoping. My whole reason for not updating this thread with more flight updates. I may fly it this weekend, but I'm practicing for the District Championship contest next weekend and should probably stick with the Abbra as I'm used to flying it. I should have some more flight info after that..

Hey Chris,
You know I'm not an electric guy but I'm curious.
I assume we are looking at the bottom of the plane in the battery picture.
I also assume you velcro strap the batteries in as well as the velcro that's shown in the picture.
Is there any danger the batteries may seperate from the plane on a bounced landing?
I know you never bounce them but guys like me do!
Thanks!
JLK
