Which motor?
 

Hi all

I want to convert my Weston UK Obsession to electric and do not know which motor to fit.

I would like to use 10S 5000mA LiPos and an APC 18x10 which is the max prop I can fit due to ground clearance.

I thought of either AXI or Hacker but I am not sure which one to buy. Will either of the motors produce enough power for pattern style flying on a 18x10 prop?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

My guess is that flying weight will come close to 5kg. Axi 5330/18 will do fine on 18x10.</p>

If you are limited to an 18" prop, you will need to spin it quite fast to get good power (~7500+ RPM). At the higher RPM ranges, you will find it beneficial to try the glow propellers or CF electric props - at higher RPM, they are generally more efficient.

I'd recommend a Hacker A60-20S....this motor has been used by quite a few for many flight (500+) with zero issues, and quite a few are still being used in the northeastern US in the Masters class.

The reason why I suggested Axi 5330/18 is because it is the motor with the highest kV rating of 259 in this power category (apart from a Keda copy http://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDH...idProduct=4653 ).</p>

One more option could be AXI 5325/20, but with 18x10 and 10S you will be pushing it during hot days. What can be done in this case is to reduce the timing on the ESC down to mid (15 degrees) and go for a wooden prop (lighter than APC and less power demanding). http://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDH...idProduct=9361 This motor is a bit lighter than 5330 which might help you better balance the plane.</p>

If the advertising for this model states that it starts from 4,5kg it means that in electro version it will be very close to 5kg and therefore each and every Watt will be needed.</p>

Refer to my thread on page 2 "Converting an Sbach 342 to electric". I used a Hyperion ZS 4035 - 12 299Kv on 8S which has plenty of power on an 18x10 APCE.

nothing is wrong with that it's just that I rather spend the £50 for a landing gear on the motor.

I just wanted to know whether anyone is flying 18x10 and which motor they are using.

But as you already suggested my best bet is the 5330/F3A with a 20x10 prop which I will most likely buy.
