Q80 with ICE 80HV
Hello all, Would anybody want to share a basic control setup to start with? I using the Hacker Q80 and Caslte ICE 80. I'm new to the electric world. Thanks!! Rick |

Hey Rick,
3.2x software Airplane Type - Medium Throttle - Fixed endpoints, see attached for setting fixed endpoints Throttle Response - Medium Brake Strength - 30% No Delay Medium Ramp Cut Off Voltage - Auto Lipo 3.2 volts per cell Current Limiting - Insensitive Cutoff Type - Soft Timing - Low PWM - Outrunner Mode I use these settings with pretty much all outrunners, and for inrunners, the only changes I make are changing to medium timing and 8 khz PWM. Thanks Dave!!!!

...talk about an awesome answer! I copied and saved that one - hope ya don't mind Dave ;)

yeah, thanks Dave!!!

RE: Q80 with ICE 80HV
Dave,
I sent you an email about my ICE 80 controller. Did I send it to the wrong address and you didn't get it? Thanks Chris |

Having a problem attaching pics. Keeps locking up after the first pic attaches. We'll see if this works.

RE: Q80 with ICE 80HV
One thing I would like to mention is that I have been running 30% brake. I have about 50 flights on this Ice80/ Q80. And last Sunday (on the 4th flight) when I went into the figure M, I drew the first upline, and stall, come down, and at the bottom in the radius (not the normal castle screech if you have too much brake) it made a really weird noise and the controller cut out. I had to go to 0 throttle then back up twice before I got it to come back on. All was good because it came back on and it saved my Neptuno. So, I talked with Castle. Good correspondence but didn't get an answer as to if I can or should still fly the controller. It ran up fine on the ground. I may go fly it this weekend at my field with a bigger runway and run the data logger. So, in talking to a few people, they said maybe there is too much brake set. Well, I tried it at 35% first off, and that was too much brake for sure. Really screechy (lol, is that a word? hehe) 30% is good for it and the plane IMO. But I may have to go down or switch back to the Jeti. I'll fly it once at 30%, then down at 25% and log both flights and see how I like the feel of 25%.
I really like the Q80 and the ICE 80. Good setup. Chris Edit. BTW, Kevin Sung, if you read this, this was all your fault! lol. You put the jinx on me at Hollister. It happened the next flight after you left! hehe |

ORIGINAL: patternflyer1 Dave, I sent you an email about my ICE 80 controller. Did I send it to the wrong address and you didn't get it? Thanks Chris Just checked my email - got your message on 26 Jan, and responded on 27 Jan. Just resent it now (10:15 EST) |
RE: Q80 with ICE 80HV
Thanks Dave. I thought it was odd. You are usually very responsive. Was hoping all was ok! Just read it. Thank you!

RE: Q80 with ICE 80HV
Chris,
One possible tweak that might help - Increase start power to medium. In general, lower starting power is better, as the initial starting "thump" is softer. However, if the start is not consistent, or there is oscillation, increasing starting power usually helps. Restarts in the air are harder to predict, but same idea usually holds true. Regards, |
RE: Q80 with ICE 80HV
Thanks Dave. I'll give it a try. I'll have to take my laptop to the field.
There is no oscillation with my Q80 though. I mounted it with a Budd Mount on the front and a aluminum hollow pin in the bearing in the back. It's really solid. I like it a lot for that! And I am running the Falcon prop. It's a pretty smooth setup. I'm really happy with it! C |
RE: Q80 with ICE 80HV
Chris,
Cool. What are you seeing full throttle static and in an upline for amps, RPM, and volts? I'm curious to see what it is doing compared to the Neu 1513 F3A and A60-16M I am running. Regards, |
RE: Q80 with ICE 80HV
79 amps in the air was max at 2956 watts! According to the data logger with the 21x14 Falcon in the Neptuno.
Oh, 37.4 v C Oh, I never checked it on the ground Dave. Forgot to put that in here. |

ORIGINAL: patternflyer1 BTW, Kevin Sung, if you read this, this was all your fault! lol. You put the jinx on me at Hollister. It happened the next flight after you left! hehe Oooops...Sorry Chris, didn't mean to pass my problem on to you, but glad to know nothing bad happens. However, I did get the replacement ICE HV80 back from Castle this week, great service. The replacement unit has a different case design, I am going to put it in the air soon and see if I can sense any difference. Kevin |
RE: Q80 with ICE 80HV
Curious, has anyone tried a PWM rate other than "Outrunner" with this setup? Castle recommends calculating PWM by using the following equation:
Motor Kv x Motor Magnetic Pole Count x Nominal Volts Used / 20 For the Q80 11S this calculates to be 10619 (205*28*37/20). Rounding this down says PWM should be set to 10k. Steve |
